Does anyone have any suggestions on what mufflers to use other than stock replacement for '70 - '72 GTO's? I want something that is freer flowing than the stock units, but I would like to keep the same dimensions if possible. My car has the 2" head pipes and 21/4" outlets. The muffler body is 21". Any input on brands, etc. would be helpful.
I was told that the Walker (P/N 21631)is the stock replacement, but it is supposedly quieter than the originals from GM. ------------------ Thanks, Jim |

Walker makes 3 different 22" case length center side inlet outlet mufflers which will work. They are the only ones I found which would duplicate the factory size & configuration & have awesome flow. The most expensive (around $100)is the Ultraflow, & it is polished stainless, not my pick for highpoint resto. The second is identical but made out of aluminized steel. It is found under the CVX line (believe I paid $74 for each CVX several years ago). Both of them are extremely good flowing mufflers, basically best in class in terms to flow. Walker also makes a cheaper series muffler in this configuration($35-40 range) which I have never used. Will try & dig out my Dynomax catalogue & find the part #'s.

My Muffler evaluation info is old, but apparently still relevant:
Walker Super Dynomax Turbos, the long oval size described above. [I actually evaluated the Sears Muzzler; oh my what a cork! ..probably don't even sell those anymore.] |
Garner Exhaust has a repo muffler for your car. I know, have them on mine. They also say that they flow as well as Flowmasters without all the noise. The company is in New York. Talk to a guy named Erik, he will set you straight. The mufflers are 60.00 each which i dont think is to bad.
