does anyone know if somebody sell a manual trans conversion kit for 1st generation firebird. something with z bar, pedals, linkage, that sort of thing. or am i best off at a swap meet or junk yard. would appreciate any info.

You will have to piece it together piece by piece, unless you can find a complete used pullout. Do believe the pedals have come out in reproduction. Might ck PY online catalogue for all the small pieces.

I did the same conversion on my 67 firebird. I bought a complete set up from a parts car.

the zbar pedals rods are in yearones catalog all I had to get was the rev lockout rod

I got the bellhousing and flywheel from the Tri-Power swap meet.

The shifter,pilot brg.,clutch fork, and clutch from Summit Racing.

The pedals I got from a 69 Firebird I parted.

Do your reverse lights work?

The dimensions you posted for the hole, is that stock dimensions? or with aftermarket Hurst Competition shifter & aftermarket shifter mtg plate?

I found the template on the 1968 Firebird Page in the FAQ's section.If you click on this link and scroll till about half a page down it's listed under "68 Shifter Hole Template for 4 Speed".

The shifter I've got is an aftermarket Hurst Competition Plus.When talking to Summet Racing the guy told me that the shifter will work with a factory console or without one.

The person who made the template copied it from his own factory 4 speed car.I concur with his dimensions after checking the template to my other 68 4 speed Firebird and it was the same.

I did have to print out the template and take it to a copier at work and keep resizing it until the size was correct. (IE: Used a ruler and compared it to the scale on the copied template.)

As for the reverse lights.AMES has the backup light switches in stock.

When you get to mounting the aftermarket Hurst shifter to the Muncie, it will mount higher & forward of the factory shifter & will probably require notching your floorpan cutout. Have run across a lot of stick early Birds with the notched floor pans in nearly 20 years of dragging in parts cars & junking.

The factory '68-69 Firebird Hurst shifter mounted on a special shaped steel bracket that positioned the shifter rearward & down low. It also used the longest shifter rods of any regular length (non big car) Muncie 4spd. Went through this when aquiring the correct complete shifter & mocking up both versions for comparison. Wife has 400 4speed convert (mothballed project) with console.

Update-Cluch fork from summit didn't work.Got the right one through PY.

Another Update-1969 pedals won't work in a 1968.Had to buy a replacement set of pedals through Classic Industries (around $65.00 or so).

Gentlemen,

Have any of you ever used the repro clutch and brake pedals? Anyone converting from an auto to a manual setup ever tried to install them? It seems you have to drill out the holes [under the dash] for the bolt that the pedals pivot on. The repro clutch pedal doesn't mount the way the original did [with a long bolt going through both the clutch and brake pedals]. It has a much larger diameter shank that will not fit into the original hole in the bracket under the dash that the automatic pedals hang from. I did this same swap on an A body and everything mounted right up with no modification. The F bodies appear to be quite different in this regard. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif
