Another mystery part, at least for me. This is hanging off the radiator core in front of the radiator. The line looks like it connects back to the transmission.

I'm going to demonstrate my utter ignorance here...have mercy....
I'm guessing tranny coolers are only for an automatic transmission?? My project car had/will have a manual transmission and the one pictured is an automatic. I'm transplanting the 350 but not taking the tranny. Thats right, you will not need the aftermarket cooler for a standard transmission car.

Yep! Aftermarket tranny oil cooler. With a manual transmission, the heat generated by the coupling the drivetrain (dumping the clutch) is transfered from the clutch friction disks and flywheel to the surrounding air via convection.
With an automatic transmission, there is no solid mechanical link between the engines crank shaft and the drive shaft. Torque is transmitted thru the torque convertor via the transmission oil itself. I know it sound wierd but the transmission fluid is directed by a stator and constantly sheared between impellor and turbine wheels in the convertor. The impellor blade (connected to the flexplate) rotates at engine speed and forces the transmission fluid thru several directional vanes. These directional vanes dischare the tranny fluid onto the leading edge of the turbine blades. The inertia and shearing forces of the discharged fluid turn the turbine blade and the rest of the transmission. This constant shearing produces heat which must be dissipated. Therefore, a transmission oil cooler must be used to prevent overheating. |
