i have an 650 holley double pumper right now witht he rebuild kit, and i have a chance to get an 800 holley double pumper for almost nothing with a rebuild kit, or i can put a 750 edelbrockon it, which would be best for my 400 engine?

Either Holley, probably the 800 is better.

Nick- I think that would depend on a number of factors. What is the vehicle and vehicle weight? What rear gears? What trans? How is your 400 built...compression ratio?...heads ported?...exhaust?...cam?...intake? etc etc. If you are running the Pontiac 4bbl cast iron intake (which is a very good intake manifold), it is a good idea to run a spread bore carb. Are the holleys spreadbore or square bore. If they are square bore and you have the factory intake you will need an adapter plate. I personally, would recommend a Qjet. Qjets are cheap, plentiful, and there is tons of advice on these forurms for how to tweak them for best performance. This is not to say the Holley is not a good carb, I just prefer Qjets.

the car is a 72 gto, the engine has 69 judge ram air 3 heads and cam roller rockers, borg warner super t-10 4 speed aluminum intake, were either doing 372 or 355 posi 21/2 inch exhaust

If they are all Spreadbore then;
750 DP sounds good.
750edelbrock I dunno.
800 is ok
Q-Jet is best for the 400.

If Straight bore, then 750-800DP, or I prefer the spreadbore. HIS

i dont want it to extreme for the street ive got to be able to drive it to school everyday, but i still want it to be fast

The very best for you will be the famous Q-jet.
Mileage AND performance in one carb, you can´t wish for more.

I would take my 650 throttle body(650,700,750and 800s all have the same one)bowls,metering blocks ect. and buy Proforms main body(PN-67100C).They are only a hundred bucks but it is one of the best hundred bucks I have spent.What you will have basicaly is a Holly 750 HP,and they cost 630$.The Proform body will run a lot better than a standard dubble pumper,idle down faster,run smoother and make more power.Its win win.Remember to install power valve blowout protectors.You will have a great carb and will not be sorry.
