I'd say the XE268 is the best choice of the three you listed. Crower has some nice grinds too. I think something along the lines of a 214-216ish intake duration with 8 degrees more exhaust on a 112 lobe sep would be a very nice street cam.

Far from an expert, but the Summit 2801 seems like it would be a good choice. $57 bucks too !
Specifications: * Advertised duration: 272 intake/282 exhaust * Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 214 intake/224 exhaust * Gross valve lift: .442 in. intake/.465 in. exhaust * Lobe separation: 112 degrees * RPM range: 2,000 to 4,500 |
Crower 60916 (221/220, .450/.470, 112 LCA). Used this cam in three medium compression 400's this year with 1.65 HS rockers. Decent idle, strong mid-range and top end power. Took on of the cars (66 GTO) to a test and tune last tuesday. In street trim with 2.05-2.25 60' times it ran 13.30's at 104mph, easily a 12 second car with good traction. Last year I tried the XE268 in a 400 with #16 heads and was not pleased with the results......Cliff

I ran a compcams 282 solid cam in my 400 in a 79 10th Ann. TA. 236/236 at .050 with 1.5 rockers on the intake and 1.65 on the exhaust. With 8.5 to 1 compresson home ported "96" d-port heads and performer rpm intake, RA III exhaust manifolds. It would run 13.1-13.3 at 106-107mph with 2.2-2.3 60 footers. I thought it was a great cam.

Cliff R. has a great suggestion. Also, the UD 221/230 that I run is a great cam in a medium compression motor.

Go with GTOPhils recommendation for more power than stock or the RAIV with Rhoads lifters for a fairly hot 400. My '65 GTO 3858# with 3.55 rear, 2500 rpm convertor did 12.70 going through the traps at 4900 rpm with a performer intake and RAIV cam

Thanks! Bill |
Bill, the drivetrain consists of a TH400 with the best of everything, Continental 10" "Jim Hand" converter, 8.2 10 bolt with 3.73 gears. The engines uses well prepared #62 heads with exhaust crossovers filled, stock cast rods, zero deck TRW forgings, balanced, RPM intake, 800cfm q-jet, 4 tube headers, Crower 60916 cam set at 110 ICL, HS 1.65 roller rockers. Idles with noticable lope, strong power from right off idle to the shift point. The goal was to build an affordable combination mild enough for daily use and still run well at the track on occassion. This is easily done with the 455's and they seem to get all the attention these days. So far we are very pleased with the results, the owner also reports very good fuel economy and no problems running pump fuel even in this BRUTAL heat.....Cliff
