I have a 69 GTO with headers and turbo 400. I replaced the starter with an after market high torque gear reduction starter. I have replaced the flex plate with TCI heavy duty plate and converter. Sometimes when I engage the starter the bendix gear will hit the flex plate and will not engage to spin the motor. When this happins, if I move the flex plate an inch or so it will engage and start. Other times it engages and starts fine. I have tried starter shims but I can't get this problem to stop. Someone please give me some help!! This is very frustrating.

I'd return the unit, take the original starter to a shop and have them install a heat shielded solenoid. I have headers and my starter use to have that problem till they put one of those on.

Ensure all wires are clear and not burned at all.
