The body mounts on my 65 are shot, but the car has allready been painted. How much trouble are these to change out, and will it effect the alignment of body panels or anything else if I replace them at this point in time? :confused: :eek:

I have a 79 Tans Am so I am not sure about the GTO. But,,The first time I replaced body mounts on a different 79 T/A that I had I did the back ones first and the the front ones(under the radiator support) last. Since I already had the back ones tight when I picked up on the front part I put a nice kink in the right side fender,,,,,ouch. When I replace the mounts on my current T/A I did all left side mounts and then all rt. side mounts. No kinks this time. Just take your time and don't force anything. Like I said I am not familar with the GTO. Hope this helps some.

Like Wayne79T/A said, unbolt only one side at a time and only lift in general mount area just enough to replace each mount(one at a time).
If you unbolt the whole car you run the risk of shifting the body on the frame.
Original bolts will be a bugger!Lots of WD :mad:

Shouldn't affect any alignments if you re-install any original shims in thier original location and don't reef bolts down until entire side has new bushings in place.

I don't know of any way to remove the front mounts without affecting the alignment of the fenders. I think that the fender will start to bind as you jack the front corner high enough to remove the mount. Good Luck

You should not have a problem with any allingment.
Since the front fenders bolt to the body not the
frame you won't have to remove any fender shims.
It might be better to work on the front then rear
than side to side. You should start spraying everything with PB Blaster.

I'm doing a frame off restoration and have one broken bolt and one stripped. Whats the best way to cure my problem?

Where are the problem bolts? The Cage-nuts are probally spinning. If they are the ones in the front of the firewall you can grab them with a wrench. The other ones you will probally have to
cut the floor above them to keep them from spinning then weld it back up after. It's not fun
I had to do this to five of them on my 67 GTO. I was lucky with my 68 they all came out except for one that the bolt broke. That one I sprayed with PB Blaster overnight and was able to remove with a pair of vicegrips the next day.

Thanks Frank, thats kind of what I figured I'd have to do. Neither one of them were in front.

GoatHead, I am doing a frame off restoration on a 64 GTO that sat in a barn for the past 25 years. You can do one of two things to change the body mounts. One is to use a long piece of hardwood (oak) and once you have removed all the bolts on one side, place a floor jack and the oak under the rocker panel near the middle of the car and raise it to where you can get the old mount out and new one in. The other way is to place the floor jack and the oak under the floor pan near the frame. Your front fenders should not be in jeopardy. I jack the entire body, front fender attached, 30 inches off the ground and can open and close the doors like the body was on the frame.
