Which 1968 GTO seat head rest are correct?
 

I see in PY and other Pontiac vendors that repro head rest are available for 66, 67, then 69 through 72 for buckets. Did Pontiac offer an optional headrest for the 68 with Bucket seats? If so, were they a one year only design? What about with bench seat head rest from 66 - 68?

Yes, Headrests were available in 68. There is a thread with a bunch of 68 pics here and some of them have the headrests. Mine has them. I'm not sure what the 67 mounting hardware looks like, but I seem to remember that the 69 is different from mine.

Attached is a pic of my 68's headrests. They were re-covered (poorly) by the previous owner. They are attached to the seat back with two posts.

Yes. 1968 gto could be ordered with headrestraints $52.00. If you ordered them you also got reclaining passenger seat. Very,very rare option...I have seen just the reclaining seat go for 1000.00 on ebay! My goat has this option...shows on the original window sticker.

I don't think that is correct, my 68 had the headrest option but no reclining passenger seat.

Hey Perry, I think you're correct. I was under the impression that if you ordered the reclining right hand seat option , it came with the head restraints.

The seats look GENERIC to me with no headrests. This is especially true on convertibles with the top down and a person in the seat. I want to add headrests to my 68 vert. Does someone have pictures of a 68 headrest seat with the cover and back taken off. Is there some sort of "kit" to add the headrest to a non headrest seat or do I need design it myself?

From the photos the 68 with head rest appear to be identical to the 69s. Is that true? I believe the 70 - 72 differed from the 69

IF YOU WANT A COMPLETE SETUP FOR THE HEADREST. I HAVE EVERY SINGLE PIECE !! THEY DO HAVE SOME PIECES THAT IS CONCEALED IN THE SEATBACK AND THEY DO HAVE TWO SLIDING POST WITH THE CLIPS TO HOLD THEM IN CERTAIN LOCATIONS. I BOUGHT SOME OF THOSE TO REPLACE THE ONES I HAD....I LIKE THE NEWER SHINE..... THE ONES I HAD THE CHROME WAS COMING OFF......NOW THESE ARE BLACK TOO...THEY REALLY DO NOT NEED TO BE RECOVERED THEY ALMOST LOOK NEW....BUT I DO HAVE ALL THE SLIDERS, SCREWS AND BOTH HEADREST...I DID SEE SOME REPLACEMENTS YOU COULD BUY BUT THEY WERE JUST THE HEADREST AND NOT ALL THE HARDWARE....I HAVE IT ALL. NOW FOR THE COST.....HONESTLY ...I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD WANT TO GIVE ME WHAT I WANT BUT YOU MAKE ME AN OFFER THAT YOU THINK WE COULD BOTH BE HAPPY WITH AND I WILL SEND YOU PICS IF YOU ARE INTERESTED ENOUGH TO MAKE US BOTH HAPPY.

My first '68 had headrest and NO reclining passenger seat. This was an untouched, original car that I bought back in 1982. In fact, for a long time I thought they all came with headrests.

Glad to hear the headrests were avail in '68 on A-body buckets w/o reclining feature. In a vendor buyout deal, picked up a pair of of '68 headrest seat backs with beige headrests. Later this Fall, will be restoring a set of '68 buckets with these seatbacks. Also have black headrests, no more reclining mechanisms though :(

Just Dashes restores the headrests by vaccum forming the correct color vinyl back to the structure. The covers just do not look good for a show car.

The headrests in 68 were option code 571 for buckets. The recliner option automatically included the headrests.

The 68 systems are similar to the 69 headrests. If you have the parts from a 69 bucket, you can put them in a 68 bucket seat and get them to look similar.

You can put in the plastic slider from a 69 in a 68 seat if you modify slightly the upper seat frame hole. The 68-bucket should already have the headrest frame spot welded in. The 69-headrest latch is slightly larger then the 68 with an external chrome release. The 69 used a chrome cover on the latch vs. the 68, which used a body color plastic cover. If you remove the spring from the 69 cover then paint it to match your seat, it will look very simian to the 68 option. Note – The headrest will not latch once you remove the spring.


I added some pictures. I used a white seat to show the 68 parts and a black one to show the 69.


The headrests themselves are similar except for the indentions in the chrome mounting shafts.If you put a 69 headrest in a 68 equipped with headrests - it will not lock in the raised position.

Well the pictures settled a mystery for me. It looks like the pair of unknown origin headrests I bought from a guy in Canada are from a '69.
Can anyone tell me if '67 and '68 bucket seat frames and seat back locks are the same?

The information I have shows the head rest option for 1968 being available two different ways. One was option code#571 RH & LH head restraints, $52.66. And, Two was option code#578 RH reclining bucket seat w/RH & LH head restraints $84.26. I also have a factory installed reclining passenger bucket seat with head rests, however it is in a 1969 GTO.

Here's what '67 headrest sockets look like. I've had these seats more than 20 years and NEVER seen any headrests for them.
