Pilot Bushing
 

Whats the easiest way to remove an old pilot bushing from the crank end? Thanks

Fill the hole with thick axle grease and then shove a shaft (same diameter as the trans. shaft) into the hole and the grease will push the bearing out.

The trick I have heard of (but never tried myself) is:

1. Find a dowel (or use the frontshaft of the transmission) that is a slip fit into the pilot bushing.

2. Fill the bushing center with thick grease.

3. Align the dowel with the hole in the bushing and give it a sharp rap with a hammer driving the grease down into the hole.

The grease is supposed to pop the bushing out.

Be sure to wear eye protection.

I've tried the grease pack-'n-pound trick. Works great.

a slide hammer works well too...

I've always used the slide hammer.

Grease works well as mentioned, just try and get all the air out when packing the grease or when you strike the dowel or punch (or whatever you are using) the hammer will bounce back. Another method is to tap it and run in a bolt with an impact.
