correct stripe color for blue TAs
 

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the correct white is supposed to be
in the stripe and shaker for the blue car?

I've purchased two from different manufacturers and they're both
a distinct off white, very close to the ivory interior.

I thought they were a true white. I'm only replacing the hood decal
and the rest are much brighter.
Almost like a polar white verses cameo.

Anyone?

to Cameo in '71-72?

chevy and ponti had different names for the same color so it is most likely the same code for Polar or Cameo.

Polar and Cameo are definitely not the same. The '70 Polar white is much brighter than the '71 Cameo white.

The white stripe on a blue car should be a bright white, like the '70 Polar color. I got the stripes for my blue car from Stencils and Stripes, and they were the correct bright white (I had worried about this since I'd seen some of the repros that looked "off-white").

1970 Chevrolet code 10 Classic White
1970 Pontiac code 10 Polar White

1971 Chevrolet code 11 Antique White
1971 Pontiac code 11 Cameo White

The code is what matters, same code, same year, same color. 1970 Shaker for a blue car should be painted 1970 code 10. As stated earlier the code 10 is a brighter white

My stripes are very bright (the parts of them that aren't chipped or peeling). I'd say Polar White.

Polar white would've been my guess as well.
That's why I was so surprised to see the off-white from
both Stencils & Stripes AND Phoenix Graphics.

I just had the darn things painted white and cleared.
The problem being not able to really tell until you remove the protective facing.

What about this for a possibilty...
Since the white cars changed from '70 to '71, it is feasible the white
trim on the blue cars changed to match?

Good news is final product looks great and I didn't want to deal with wax
around the decals anyway.
Just cost a bit more : )

Ok, so in 1970 the hood scoop on a blue car matched the stripe since Polar White is a bright white, and in 1971 and 1972 the scoop is a different color - Cameo White. Correct?

One thing's for sure, the factory didn't care nearly as much about this as you guys..;)

The Stripe Kit that I bought for my Lucerne Blue '72 T/A from Year One back in 1987 is a much brighter white than either Polar White or Cameo White. We tried the brighest white paint we could find for the hood scoop and it still wasn't bright enough to match the stripes. We finally painted the scoop Cameo White and left it at that.

There's a difference if you look close, but I don't think it matters much. I think that if you look at most restored '70-'72 T/A's, you'll find quite a few have this same problem. No one has ever mentioned to me that my stripes don't match my hood scoop. I don't think it's a big concern, but it's your call.

I first bought a stripe kit from Year One in 1991. It was the 2-layer kind, and it featured a very bright white stripe! Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), I had some problems installing the stripes in 1996, and, knowing that the original one-layer kit was now available, removed the stripes. The newer kit had a "toned down" white stripe, but it is still whiter than the Cameo scoop. I've been trying to return the car to somewhat of an original condition (it was a class 6 when I started), and wanted to get the scoop color close.

It is difficult to impossible to distinguish between the stripe and the scoop in most pics, including those of your car. I'm going to double check that my scoop is Cameo White, though that is what it is supposed to be. I do appreciate all the threads.

To further add to the confusion
I've purchased three different nose birds and they
have all been the bright white.
Has anyone seen a cameo white bird?

I have a new '71 coming next week with fresh paint
and a stripe kit to be applied.

I'd like to get it right on this one.

Alan, I've never seen a "two layer" stripe kit. I was installing GM stripes in the late 70's and 80's, and then aftermarket but have never come across this. What was two layered?

I've got a NOS nose bird on my car that was purchased in 1987 and it appears to match the cameo white on my hood scoop. It's not near as bright as the reproduction white stripes on the rest of the car.
