Need spoiler and flare advice
 

Hi All,

My buddy recently trashed his chin spoiler and passenger side
wheel flare on his '73 Brewster Green TA.

The reproduction pieces are so inferior I am recommending
used or the ever elusive NOS, but thought I'd ask here if
anyone has any info on some higher quality repops.

You know I've seen some of the parts catalogs that show they sell reproduction flairs and they are made using the GM tooling. I have never bought any, but one would think they would be decent. On my 70 project car I am trying to find good used ones to redo and I was lucky enough to find NOS chin spoilers out there.

Even the NOS ones in GM boxes still need work! But, they do fit good.
The only ones that I have liked, are the old NOS ones that used to come painted.

Have you tried one of the reproductions from the GM tooling?
I was hoping that they might be the answer.

If you are talking about the repros in original GM boxes, yes, I have used them.
They had sections that I had to fill, and some I had to sand flat, to make them work.
If they don't come with GM boxes, I steer away from them.

No matter what style flares you end up with, I suggest taking a heat gun (careful, use low setting, just enough to get the plastic moldable) to them before painting. I did on mine to get a better fit around the edge contours. Also, be aware that there is incorrect and correct rubber spoiler welting. It's been a while but, I think I got bad stuff from Year One and good stuff from Ames. You'll know because the bad stuff does not appear correct, will not contour or stay on long enough to glue.

I've used the ones made with gm tooling and they also needed a lot of work. I called the place of purchase and was told "Sir, the tooling is 30+ years old." Gee, I'm really glad that I spent the extra money for GM tooling. NOT BTW, they are still in my garage as I'm looking for used or new NOS.
