Restoring 1971 Judge, Questions

Hello, my name is Jon and Im new to the forum and the car restoration world.

The 1971 GTO Judge (this is the first car Ive ever restored!) Im working on had sat outside for 20 years in Michigan, but is in pretty decent shape. Im going to restore it to a full "STOCK" form.

Ive got the car body off and chassis torn apart, just about ready to send the frame in for sandblasting.

Just a couple quick questions.....

In the trunk area was there carpet or just bare sheet metal? The car didnt have any in the back when we got it. :confused2

The cover on the rear end housing...did it come from the factory chrome? The current cover on it is chrome, but if it didnt come stock then we want it gone.

If anyone has suggestions, feedback, questions you can respond here, email me, PM me, use MSN Messanger, or Yahoo Messanger.

Ill need help as I go along and will post pictures of my progress, thanks everyone :)

Hi Jon and welcome!

To answer your question, no chrome on the rear housing cover. Typically painted black like the rest of the chassis. Here is a pic of what the finishes should look like on that end.

The trunk didn't have a carpet but had a cloth mat. You can buy a repo one that is close enough to the original. As for the trunk metal finish, after primer, it was painted with a black/aqua speckle paint.

So how about telling us more about this Judge!

My 71 GTO trunk is grey and white spatter paint as is my 71 judge i do think by 72 the paint was the aqua but dont know when that happend for sure. I am nearing the end of my judge restoration and would help out with as many questions as i can.

Well Its a Black 455 so you know how special those are.

We took the motor apart and the pistons will need to be replaced and the cylinders bored to remove scoring. Apparently someone decided to hot-rod in it in their youth.

What more would you like to know?

The tranny is a 4-speed thats all I know!
