Where is the best place to get front coil springs??
 

Well....um..see what happened was...I cut 3/4 of a coil of the front of my Studebaker and the ride height didn't change at all.

So, I went one coil more. Oops. That put the thing down on the bumpstops. Now I can't get out of the driveway...

Summit had 1 1/2 drop Hotchkis springs for 165 bucks. That sounds about right, but do you guys have a better source?

By the way, this car has a 76 Firebird front clip and a 462" w/ a th350.

I know our host has a "host" of springs to offer.
For custom height springs I have used Coil Spring Specialties out in Kansas, 785-437-2025. Good product, good service, good people and good turn around time.

Here is a quick pic. I pulled it out of the shop and it beat the hell out of the front spoiler then drug a bunch of rocks with it backing in...

PS. The car is not done. It runs and drives, but I still have a butt load of final assembly, paint and body.

NAPA has them. Their numbers are the same as Moogs numbers with a slight variation.

The only way to get 'advertised' spring rates with the quality control you'd expect is to go to places like AFCO, Landrum, Hypercoil, SCP, and the place like these. I've struggled with springs from Moog, Detroit, TRW, PST, etc, and it's not worth the headache. The Hotchkis springs I have on my '71 are way too soft, and bottom out regularly. Wish I would have done the homework before I bought those...

You should just get on Speedwaymotors.com and order up two of their hidden adjusters for coil springs. You will probably have to cut a little more off you coils but they are adjustable from 3.5" to 5" I think and they will give you the ability to set your ride hieght right where you want it wthout jacking with cutting springs and all that. I am going to use them in my GTO with standard 9.5"x 5" round track springs. They are about $30 each.

Did anyone use springs from AMES and how were they.

GearBanger- Think we had that conversation before, regarding the adjuster. But refresh my memory, do you have to take it apart to adjust it, the spring/control arm? Or can you do it by just removing the wieght and turning it?

Carquest springs are Moog. They use the Moog numbers and it says Moog right on the box.

I know for 2 reasons

A. I am a district manager for Carquest and I have been to the Moog plant.

B. I just finished installing a set of brand new Moog coils into the front of my Lemans. (what a pain in the ass)

I looked it up for you. For a 76 T/A with air, with auto, with a 400 the part number is 5376. Let me know if you need more info.

Good info 71SportRagTop, but the car is a Stude' with a '76 FB front clip. I would guess that a higher rate spring would be required for the additional wieght, something in the 650# range probably.... You just put Moog springs in your car? Does it sit even? Curious, since many have complained about the rates varying enough to make the cars sit uneven...

ESPO has quite a variety of springs. And they will custom make them if they don't have it. www.ESPO.com It's where I got my drop springs for my 67 wagon.

What's wrong w/ Summit?
That's where I got my Hotchkis drop springs for my TA.

For the record, I LOVE Summit racing. I've ordered stuff from them for 15 years and they have yet to dissapoint.

Larry- Do you feel the Hotchkis springs are too soft? Does it bottom on dips at speed?

I do not have it installed on mine yet but my feeling is you would have to take it apart. The adjuster is smooth on th outside with no notches to get a hold of with a coil over wrench or anything like that so I would say it would be pretty hard do with the spring in it. Also, I don't think you can see it when it is in place. It goes at the top, so it's going to be hidden up in the frame pocket.
