Exhaust Burning my eyes

I started my 65 GTO Tripower for the first time and the exhaust burns gases burns my eyes. I read earlier post on this list, can't remember when advising what the problem is and the cure. I would appreciate it if someone could repost the answer to this prblem.

Thanx,

Don

I didn't see the earlier answer but it sounds to me that you are running very rich. Pull a couple of spark plugs to verify. Go over to Pontiac Dude's website for good info on reading your plugs. Just click on Ken's Speed Icon on the right hand side of this forum. You may have a sticking choke or the idle mixture is too rich on the carbs. I've not worked on Tri-powers but have had similar symptoms with a single four barrel.
Good luck.

If the exhaust has a sort of acidic smell and does not burn black, you are running totally lean. This is called a lean missfire and this will definately burn your eyes!!!. I tried leaning out one of my cars when I failed emissions and got this smell and I failed way worse.

remove eyes from exhaust and the problem will go away.

I agree with sixt8bird. Bought a 442 that was jetted so lean it made the entire area unbearable. Leaning out the idle only made things worse, I richened the idle mixture as much as I could and it made a huge difference.

Drop the nitro percentage down.
(Sorry- couldn't resist!)
