Lifter problem
 

my buddy had a 455 built about 6 years ago and it sit in the car till just last week while he finished the resto on the car. It has some clatter so we thried to do an adjustment today.

You know how when things are normal with a hyd lifter you crank them in till the clatter stops then you crank down an extra 1/3 or 1/2 turn the valve hangs open a touch and runs like crap then it does its job and self adjusts and runs fine again. Well these dont do that the lifter feels spongy and dosent hang the valve open untill it bottoms out and then it keeps running like crap

I also noticed that there isnt much oil while doing the valve adjustment. It has some but usually these a bit of a mess.

im thinking maybe they used chevy lifters and they are not getting good oil preasure to the lifter?

the car has about 30 pounds going down the road at 3000 rpm.

30lb is too low.

thats why im thinking they might have stuck chevy lifters in it and its leaking out

I never get much oil at idle, speed it up past idle and it shoots over the fender
why are you bottoming out the lifter? just go 1/2 turn as you usually do and run it
actually, after 6 years the factory fluid in the lifters might be gummed up, I recently pulled some new PCs off the shelf that were about 5 yrs old and had to pump them with a pushrod in solvent to free the oil passages
On an already running motor I would put a quart of RISLONE in it with new oil and run the crap out of it for a few days. It really cleans out lifters.

Don't believe the chev lifters could leak that much. I like to see 20lb at idle and 60lb at 5k rpm. If you can't come up with that, find the problem.

If you have sufficient oil pressure, suggest you check the oil hole in your lifters and ensure that it is in the relief area and not up on the side of the lifter. Chev and Pontiac are very different in how they present oil to the lifter from the galley.

If I run a chev lifter, I endmill a .060 wide slot from the hole down to the relief area. This ensures correct oiling to the lifter. or,,, get the correct Pontiac lifter from Ames Performance, tell Wray Murdough I told you to call.

Adjustment should be no more than 1/4 turn down with engine running. I adjust cold to .001 clearance. Push rod spins free without .001 feeler guage and binds slightly with the guage.

I am even in teh same situation as the engine was rebuilt 4 years ago and never ran until now.

We ended up changing them. Proubly should have gave them more of a chance, but we had some other issues and had to take it apart anyways.
