cam or converter

There is something wrong with my setup. either the cam or the torque convertor must go. The car feels like it is towing another car down the track. The best 60' time is 1.90 it looks like it's in slow motion at the line.
Any ideas?

Anywork done to the heads? What is your other times like 330' 660' and 1/4 mile? Does the car lay down the whole track or does it seem to run better in a certain portion of the track? This information will help diagnose what is going on during your run.

That cam sounds pretty healthy and the car seems to have alot of good parts that would make it run good as well as being pretty light.

Carb? I have seen a few threads which do not lean favourably to the edelbrock carbs on pontiacs!

Timing?

russ467 07-08-2006 10:41 PM

I would look at how fast your TOTAL timing is coming in, then how well the carb is responding. You need a holley based double pumper or a very well set up quadrajet.

Timing is set at 15 with a total of 36 in at 2500rpm. Cliff R set up the carb and I have also used an Edelbrock 750 performer with not much difference in performance.

What kind of distributor are you using?
Vacuum advance?

Tom Hand 07-08-2006 11:00 PM

I would think that it will be way cheaper and make an easier to drive car if you swapped the cam for one much, much smaller. The converter it would take to work with that one will be very expensive and then you will have a strip car that will be annoying to drive on the street.

I am starting to think the same way about the cam. The car will be driven on the streets once in a while but mostly a drag car.

If I were you, I would first try to lock the distributor to give you full advance all the time. That should wake it up. I also think you may need more converter, but you still should be getting way better than a 1.90 60ft unless you are spinning!

Last, I would see if you could borrow a known good 750 double pumper to try.

No tire spin at the line. Cliff R ran my carb on his car and it ran mid 11's with no problems. How do you lock the distributor in a full advance?

russ467 07-08-2006 11:23 PM

I dont run an MSD distributor, so I dont know for sure on yours. I think there is a kit you can buy that will lock it out.

JKGTO 07-08-2006 11:38 PM

That cam is way too big for a 400. Nothing you can do is going to make it run very well except some 4:56 gears and an 8" converter. Jim

GOAT490 07-08-2006 11:39 PM

I ran the H0-3 cam with similar specs in a 462 with about 11:1 compression and a similar setup to yours and it ran pretty good. I think the cam is WAY TOO BIG unless you go to 4.56 gears and/or a bigger convertor. A 750cfm should be plenty for those cubes/rpm. What is your compression?

heads are 13's and the block was not zero decked so it should be a little less than 10.1

Was the cam degreed?
Or just "line up the dots" and assumed to be "straight up"???

I'd at least try advancing the ICL to 104-102 degrees or so first...

That H-O cam is a hydraulic cam with roughly the same specs,INDY's cam is a solid cam,big difference in most folks books.

In that other thread you said you had gotten some mid twelves (12.53 IIRC) out of it but were having traction issues, what's changed since then???

chiphead 07-09-2006 12:01 AM

Crower or Comp XE274 hyd flat tappet cam. Something in the 230-236 range, 500 lift. Problem solved!

I run a XE274 in a 9.3:1 407, and I'm happy with it. Best time so far is 8.2 sec in the 1/8 at 84.5 MPH. 3600lb car, 3200 stall verter, 3.23 gears. Shooting for the 7s with 3.90s, tires and tuning.
