chasis ground
 

Could anybody send me or post shots of where the chasis ground is connected to the engine block or the battery?

I recently had my engine compartment wires replaced and ever since the gagues haven't been grounded properly. I'm thinking there's probably supposed to be some wire that grounds the engine and chasis as the ground for the battery is only connected to the block.

Yes it matters. On my 1970 GTO The ground from the battery goes to a head bolt. Then I have a ground connected to the rear of the engine (on the head) to the (Firewall) its a flat copper strap. You can never have enough ground.

I have a 1970 GTO hardtop with a 400, auto trans. There is also a ground strap that runs from the front passenger side frame rail (a bit back from the radiator) to the passenger side inner fender.

I agree, one can never have enough ground, especially when my guages like to blink w/ my turn signal. Nice!!

How are the copper straps attached? I am at a loss here as I've no experience w/ how things were done back in the day and I had someone else pull my engine. This means i couldn't 'put things back the way they were'.

It would be great if i could get a shot or two. If you don't have a place to post it, i'd be super greatful if you could forward it to my email.

sounds like there maybe a bad round on the printed circuit board for the gauges

can i get a bit more description regarding the correct location?

I've got this image... http://ultimategto.com/1970/70_00083_11.jpg showing the ground at the fire wall. When you say connecting to the head, do you mean the support for spark plug wires? Is there another location where it should be?

I see a whole on the front passanger side frame rail, but i cannot find a whole on the inner fender would it be up around the washer fluid container?

That pic has the ground wire attached to one of the accessory holes on the back of the head.

that seems to be a reoccuring theme amongst some of the '70 engine compartments that i've been looking at. This isn't the correct location?


i've noticed a bunch of early goat owners seem to think it should go on the driver's side, not the passengers.

Per the GTO assembly manual...

And, one of my cars (firewall is stripped, but it was attached to the lower hole but I believe it should have been the circled hole) I will look for the strap and see if I can get another picture of the mounting.

Aaron75, was your GTO built in Fremont (Z in the VIN)? Sometime in Feb. or Mar. it looks like the Fremont plant changed the location of the strap on the firewall (may have been earlier at other plants), to under the voltage regulator. I've also included pictures of the mounting location on the head, the components used and, at some point, they added an extra ground to the wiring harness.

thanks so much!! It was made in fremont. These shots are perfect. Looks like i stuck it in the wrong spot but i'll definatel make the change.

Is this the only strap, or do i have to worry about the frame to passenger inner fender (can't find those holes either).

I'm not going to say some plants didn't install them, but I've never seen them there. And the assembly manual doesn't mention it either. Do I have your trim tag info entered into my database? PM me, please.

The trim tag (or body tag) is a stamped metal plate and is located under the hood, near the master cylinder. Format will look like...
