TH 400 kickdown setup?
 

I may be switching from my 700R4 to a 400 in my '79 Formula, whatand how do I need to set up the kickdown with my TII intake and Demon carb?

The TH400 uses an electric kickdown switch. It is located under the gas pedal, not on the carb. Lokar makes a nice billet kickdown switch that attaches to the carb linkage instead of the gas pedal, if you can't find any stock pedal switches in the junkyard.

The cable attaches to the carb, in which you set where on the trottle opening it starts to pull the cable and activate the switch.(usually half throttle or so, it where you want it to acctually kick down) Just run power to one side of the switch, and the other down to the tranny

If you don't have the factory switch under your gas pedal already get 1. Best solution. If you can't find 1 I have extras somewhere. All the same pretty well. Easiest to find on old pickups or 70+ big cars as most had th400s. Take the wiring harness too.

A buddy of mine just fabricated a small bracket that we mounted to the carb for the kick-down. We bought a micro switch ($4.00) that we attached to the mounting bracket and, I just wired it to a relay and used ground as the trigger.
Works great. I'm attaching a pic of the bracket and switch mounted on the carb.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. I decided to give the 700R4 one more chance before going to a TH400. I got it back in the car this weekend but need to replace the battery.

Finally got a bit of time to browse the threads, the instant e-mail notification does not seem to work for me.

Anyway, I'm currently using a holley bracket that houses both the throttle and TV cable. The bracket only has one mounting point (poor engineering) so I had to tie it down to prevent it from moving front to back eack time I depressed the throttle.

At the carb throttle lever I attempted to use a Holley "corrector bracket" for the proper movment of the cable, but the arc in which the mounting point of the TV cable moved was not in the right relation to the TV plunger in the transmission. I tried to customize it but could never get it right so I made my own, its not pretty but it works pretty well.

Does Demon have a line of bracketry for this type of setup?

From browsing these forums, I have realized that I don't have a kickdown switch either. I have a '69 firebird with the TH 400 tranny, 350 engine. I knew the kickdown did not work, but did not know why. I do not have the gas pedal switch or anything on the carb either. There is a wire that goes down to the tranny and is plugged on to it, but is evidently not hooked up to anything. What would be the best answer for my situation???

Stripped out a 67 Chevy biscayne that had a switch mounted on the carb, the tab on the back of the Qjets throttle arm contacted the switch. It doesnt take much to set one up in any case, just apply 12v to the solenoid and it will kick down.

Hey BG tech.. I have Demon on my GTOs 455 and I cant find anything to get the geometry correct for the TV on the 2004R, you guys have anything for it?

At this point we don't offer a specific bracket for the TH400 stuff, from what I've used in the past the standard "Bolt under carb" brackets seem to be the best.

Actually Bowtie Overdrives has a really nice setup for the TV cable deals.
