4L80 fit?

I have a 1974 TA. If I attempt to convert to a 4L80 transmission am I going to have to cut or round out the transmission tunnel to make it fit? Also, will it work with my Continental converter (3000 stall).

Make rooom for the Electrical controller (puter).

Jeff Walker 07-19-2006 11:22 AM

No your Continental converter will not fit as the 4L80E converter is unique to itself. And more than likely you would have to do some tranmission tunnel mods.

While it is a tough unit, it is larger than a TH400, a LEAST a 100 lbs heavier, and a Half-Inch metioned, is an electronically shifted unit.

critter 07-19-2006 11:37 AM

OK. Had one offered to me at at decent price but I don't want to modify the tunnel. Thanks.

ponjohn 07-19-2006 04:28 PM

Yup- the girth of the l80 is waaay bigger than a 400.

Half-Inch Stud 07-19-2006 04:32 PM

Whoa, hey...get it for them superior internal parts.

critter 07-19-2006 04:46 PM

Superior? Other than the OD portion of it isn't it about the same as a TH400?

I'd like to have an OD that will take 450hp and 550ft. lbs. of torque and not have to modify the tranny tunnel to get it in.

Anybody have a source for such a beast.

(Oh, and can you make it cost less than my house?) ;)

i know of a guy who installed one in a 1970 camaro ss with no mods to tunnel .
for the power level you're stating , a well built 700r4 will take that with no problem.
just ask Cliff .

critter 07-19-2006 05:17 PM

Yeah, I'd read his and Wheelspin's comments while searching the archives. So what's the going rate on dropping in a 700r4? I'm seeing packages coming in around $2k out there on the internet. Anyone do it right and do it any cheaper or is that the "do it right" price?

lunaticeh 07-19-2006 07:30 PM

I did the 80 swap in my old 4x and now it's in my dually. It's longer and heavier than the TH400, but can handle some nice numbers when built right, and the OD is nice on the highway. Be prepared to shell out at least $1500 for a kit to control it, getting a special lockup torque built another $800, etc... etc... It gets pricey, but if it's what you want then do it. There's also the option of getting it converted to a full manual valve body... I can't remember who makes a kit for that but it's becoming more popular. Hope it helps...

google- quadzilla this is manual 4l80e.

Ponjon, tried to respond to your PM but your box is full.

If it means I have to alter body panels, I won't do it. I'd rather swap rear ends and torque converters long enough to do the Hot Rod Power Tour and then swap back when I'm done.

Money wise, I am on a budget. I need to keep it inexpensive so that's another plus for the rear end swap. That said, it would be nice to swap the tranny once and be done with it.

Fullhouse 07-19-2006 09:49 PM

An almost direct bolt in is a 200r4. I got one in my car 3000 stall 7.93 1/8 with 3.42 gears. Only mod you have to make is the shifter and a wire to run the lock up torque converter. I have a non lock up in mine.

critter 07-19-2006 09:53 PM

That's impressive. How many passes on that transmission and on what type of tires?

What about a Gear Vendors OD unit? I think it will handle up to 1200+ hp.

If you are cost conscious well then this may not be the unit. I believe they are about $2500.

critter 07-19-2006 11:22 PM

I've helped install a GV unit. Very sturdy but they do require modifying the transmission tunnel. That's not something I'm willing to do to my SD car.

ponjohn 07-20-2006 07:05 AM

critter- cleared it out. Had no idea it was a SD car- makes sense.
