71 455ho gt-37 4spd
did anyone else talk to the guy from mich with the black gt-37 at norwalk sun?
nice orig car with the exception of minor rust on the rr 1/4. black vinyltop, black paint and int. no stripe,[was a gold sword stripe car but he had them pulled when they started to peelwhen the car was 6 months old] polished torque thrusts, original owner with a copy of the window sticker. 455 ho 4spd, 3:90 gear car, rare in it's own right and black to boot. he said he wanted a gto but the bank didn't want to loan a 24 yr old the money at the time. they evidently didn't bat an eye at the gt-37 tho. i passed the forums web address on to him so maybe he'll join. he was shocked i knew what a gt-37 was, and even more shocked that i own one. we didn't take a camera so i don't have any pics but thought one of you may have seen it and got some. mike |
Saw it but didn't take any pics either. I was shocked at how the prices on some rare parts were much lower than previously on ebay. No doubt from seeing how many cars can't sell on ebay that prices are coming down!
Good ... now I'll be able to get my second car! |
Oh yeah ... picked up a complete numbers set of 5 JL wheels 4 of them refinished for $400.00
I know that's historically expensive but less than 1/2 price from ebay only 6 months ago. There were other great deals on ram air heads and other such stuff. Anyone holding onto huge prices didn't move hardly anything. |

That sounds like a very cool car with a special order axle too.
I have a picture of a 71 GT-37 with a 455 HO at the GTOAA in Mich. I wonder if it is the same car? I hope someone got some pictures of the inside, and out. |
Im fairly sure its the same car, I talked to him at GTOAA in Detroit it was an original owner car and the story about the stripes was the same. A very cool car.
|
that's the car. he's a nice guy, with a cool car.
he's kinda sour about how he was treated at the gtoaa show, enough that he had a copy of the window sticker to prove it was a true gt-37. mike |

I REALLY like this car over on the Classical Pontiac site (go to "Features" to read about the details). The stealth aspects of a '71 T-37 with a 455 H.O. are so appealing to me. I've never seen one of these for sale, either. Wonder what one would bring?
And those non Ram Air H.O. air cleaners are a real b!tch to find too (from what I've read). They must be commanding some serious coin. |
T-37, GT-37 HO cars
Production on the T-37 455 HO are 11 total 7 sticks (6 4-speeds), and 4 automatics.
Production numbers on the GT-37 HO are a total of 54. Estimates break it down to be about 34 sticks and 20 automatics. The value is somewhere between a 71 Judge and 71 GTO 455 HO is what I've been told. Low production, lighter weight, big engines, and the sleeper car look make them pretty cool to own. Dan Jensen's cloned T-37 HO car has put down some impressive times at 12.55 as seen in the latest HPP, and has been beating the 69 RA IV cars at the the track too. Not bad for a 71 with low compression emission cars! |
JL Wheels

Hello, I am not trying to start anything but simply want to let people know that a nice "correctly" refinished set of 5 JL wheels (date coded with the same dates) cannot really be had for the $400.00 price these days. I will buy as many nice sets of 5 JL's for $400.00 all day long. The wheels that you purchased are different dates, finished in the wrong color and 3 are pitted horribly, including the bead area, almost beyond use. Two of the five were fairly nice and his price on those two alone was $300.00. The other three were thrown in for $100.00. I just did not want anyone to be mislead on what is out there. Prices on correct date coded rally II's has done nothing but climb. I was set up with parts for sale at Norwalk and did quite well. I also saw lots of parts changing hands for good $$$. |

The number quoted above of the 11 cars is for post cars only. I am not at home so do not have information on number of HT's and the LeMans and LeMans Sports that had the 455HO but total A body NON GTO 455HO in '71(to include GT-37) is 123. There was 1 3 speed in the 11 as 6 + 4 + 1 = 11. You are right they were/are fun.
Second picture is out of focus as it is a copy of a polaroid taken in April '71. |
I was at norwalk sat and sunday.I had the green and white t-37.I also saw the black gt-37 and thought it was a real nice car I couldn't find the owner though.

Love that sleeper look of a T-37 with an LS5 motor but I'm not sure it would go for more money than a LS5 Lemans or GTO. It's a myth that the T-37 was lighter. For example, a 455HO GTO Hardtop weighed in at 3633lbs, whereas a 455HO T-37 weighed 3616, only 17 lbs lighter. Production of the LS5 Lemans cars where 0,6,19,17 for Lemans Coupe, Lemans Hardtop, Lemans Sport and Lemans Sport Convertible respectfully. Lemans Sport and GTO gave you bucket seats and upgraded interior.
Nice to see Dan getting those numbers with that car. Talk about a sleeper! |
Oshawa Assembly built 12 T-37 and 3 Lemans Sport hardtops with 455HO in 1971.

A barebones '71 455HO T-37 coupe will go 3475-3480 lbs. Add 22lbs for likewise stripper 455HO T-37 hardtop. I own one of each. The coupe is the factory Engineering car & was equipped with a/c & quite a few geegaw options. Believe it was the most loaded out coupe on Dan J's registry, but it will go under 3650lbs, have weighed it before. Have not weighed the GT-37. It is 455HO/auto with few factory options. |
3.90 gears in the 12 bolt? What's up with that?
|
My bad on production numbers should be as JP stated for post coupe T-37 HO cars. Where do you find the weight info? I heard the real myth is the hp ratings?

Pinion head, before you burst out in laughter again  maybe you should read your PHS docs. These weights were taken right off the AMA specification form filed by GM on 9-9-70. Jim Mattison usually includes a copy of this form in a 1971 A-body PHS packet. If you have the PHS on your cars, then you should have this info. From page 25-26: T-37 2-Dr. Hardtop curb weight: 3324lbs . This is a base 6cyl T-37. Next, add 292.3 pounds for the LS5 (455HO) engine. That's a total of 3616lbs. GTO Hardtop curb weight: 3593lbs. Since this is a 400 motor, add 13.6lbs for the 455HO, that's a total of 3606. It goes on to mention that the extra coolant/radiator and dual exhaust added about 20 something pounds. Can you tell me why a T-37 would be hundreds of pounds lighter than a GTO with the same drive train? I find it hard to believe the endura nose added that much weight. Lemans and Lemans Sport had the same front end yet these were not considered "light weight". I'd like to see these two cars weighed side by side to see what the actual weight difference (if any) is between the cars. |
I was wondering, weren't the bucket seats and console around 30 pounds heavier? Was the bench seat lighter?
|

Bench seat was lighter, yes. Pontiac specifies on the AMA form that there is a 12 pound weight reduction for bench seat over buckets. No big deal. Doesn't explain the hundereds of pounds claimed.
The console was an option to cars with buckets, not included with them. I attached these two pages so you can see the factory curbs weights of these 71 A-bodies. The second pic (page 26) is where you can calculate the weight based on options by either adding or subtracting the option. Do the math. |
I kind of agree,I dont see how leaving off a few things dropped a few hundred pounds.I know some T-37's wouldn't have sound deadener, underhood insulation, trim rings, pontiac name plate on the grille. And as mentioned the bench seat was lighter. Was there any thing else they could have left off to make lighter?
