Intake Coolant sensors on a 70 GTO
 

Hi all,

From what I've been able to gather from the archives.. the two sensor ports on a regular 1970 GTO engine (WT), were setup from the factory as:

Passenger side: Held the three prong combination temp guage/tcs inhibit sensor (no longer reproduced)

Drivers side (behind alternator) : Just a plug?

Correct?

My 70 has a single wire connecter to the sensor on the drivers side. I think its green. The 3 prong vacuum plug, on my car is missing, but were they the same for AC and non AC cars?

My understanding is there was no "3 prong vacuum plug" on 1970 GTO's.... it was replaced by the electrically driven "TCS" system.

Instead, there was a three prong electrical plug, that performed both temperture guage and vacuum advance control duties (via the TCS solenoid mounted back by the rear heater hose fitting). This was mounted in the passenger side "coolant port" on the intake.

Again, looking for confirmation of above from those in the know.

If your talking about the temperature sensor...aka 'sending unit'.......it's on the driver's side of the car, and it is a single green wire. It slides onto a rounded clip.

Um.... I'm not sure about that... My references say the original factory coolant sensor was three prong, and installed on the passenger side port.

The three prong unit has gone obsolete, so it often gets replaced by the simplified aftermarket unit, but that's not how it came from the factory.

I just bought a brand new wiring harness and it has the three prong connector.

yes, TPS required the 3 prong plug to open and close the solenoid. Hence why our '70 carbs don't have any ported vacuum openings.

Yes the other one is typically plugged, although some folks on this site have indicated that that's where they stick their real sensor so they can have their broken 3 prong sensor sticking out front looking all original. Rather clever idea that i wish i had thought of before I tossed my 3 prong plug.

The one on the driver's side was plugged if the car had standard "idiot lights", but when equipped with rally gauges it was used for the temp gauge. All cars had the three prong switch on the passenger side.

I thought the three prong switch also functions as a sensor for the temp guage (i.e. temp gauge and idiot lights), doesn't it?

If there are two different sensors (three prong plug and separate sensor for temp guage) - I don't think my harness has a plug for it.

gtotobbe may be right as originally my car had idiot lights.

I've since switched them to rally but used the original 3 prong plug location as i'd already tossed my 3 prong plug.

Sorry for giving bumb (or incomplete information). I should have qualified it.

OK. I back from vacation. getmygoat, you need a rally gauge temperature sender extension, PN 15585 (M & H). You can get it from PY under that PN for around $12. Otherwise, you have it correct, three prong sender on the passenger side. And, plug or temperature sender unit on driver side.
