Help me determine price for this TA please?
 

I'm not into Firebirds or TA's but came across this 79 this morning. Overall it appeared to need alot of attention. Alot of surface rust but did find some rot in the deck lid and underneath the trunk. The hood was also wrinkled up and the nose was pushed in a bit. Both would probably need to be replaced. My wife called on it while I was taking pics and he's asking $1500. My opinion is its not worth that. I hope the pics help cuz like I said I'm not really into these types of cars as of right now but do like the looks of them and wouldn't mind getting one sometime. So what would you give for it. I am also assuming it doesnt run...

It's not worth $1500 in my opinion either. Not even close. That car's too rough. I do auto resto for a living, so have a pretty good sense for these things. There are many much better 79 TA's for sale, for not that much more money. 79 had highest production of all the years, so there are still many to choose from. And while the value of them is rising some, they are still priced very reasonably, unlike the earlier TA's. So I'd spend a little more for a good one. Actually, if you have the money, you'd be ahead moneywise if you spent a substantial amount on an excellent original unrestored example. The better the example you buy, the less you have to do and spend on it. Someone once said the cheapest car you will buy is the one that you spend the most for to begin with :D.
But I didn't follow my own advice and bought a 79 TA 2 months ago for $1600 and drove it home. It wasn't quite as good as I wanted, and was going to walk away, but when he got down to $1600, it was a good deal and I took it. The body is much better than the one in your pics and the engine runs perfectly, having been recently rebuilt. Mechanically it's good. It will still need body and paint and interior, which I can do. So there are good deals to be had. I've seen some good deals on eBay.
I've been gathering the parts I'll need. I have spent twice what I gave for the car on various interior parts, emblems, spoilers, lenses, w/strips, etc. I'll probably have $5000-$6000 in parts before I'm done. And that's with no mechanical or body and paint work. And the body and paint work is even more expensive, if you don't do it yourself. So that gives you an idea of the other costs involved when you buy one that needs all the cosmetics. You can probably save $3000 easily by buying a car with a nice interior to start with. So good luck with your search.

I agree with Grand73AM. To give you a comparison, I sold a similar 1977 California rust-free Trans Am for $600. The price of these cars are rising fast, but with as must rust repair as your car will need, the price is on the high side unless it happens to be a rare optioned car.

Looks like an "overpriced parts car" to me!

Some smart guy has left the shaker off & the carb open so the motor is likely full of water & JUNK.

Tadpoles inside engines are NOT a good thing!

My guess would be a 403 Olds/auto & they made 90,000 of them that year.

As Grandam 73 says,buy a 5000 dollar car & save yourself 10,000!

Now if it were a 70-73 T/A,thats a DIFFERENT STORY!
