4 Speed Hump
I hope this hasn't been answered already. I am performing a concours restoration on a 69, 4 speed Judge. The car was converted to automatic some time in the early 80's for drag purposes. Thankfully, I have the original tranny and engine block. Anyway, when they converted the trans. and added the automatic (Pontiac stuff), they altered the hole in the transmission hump. Here is my question...what should the hole in the hump look like to accomodate a 4 speed car? I was getting ready to order the 4 speed tunnel cover and I saw it described as "...68-72 four speed tunnel cover w/out console..." Does that mean that console cars did not have a tunnel cover? My car was ordered with a console. Does anyone have any photos of an unmolested tunnel without carpeting?
I have heard that as the cars came down the line, the line workers would cut a hole in the tranny with anything that was near them and that the actual hole is very irregular. Is this true? While I want my car to be accurate, I don't necessarily want it to include sloppy or imprecise practices that might have been used in '69. Salt on the roads already in Wisconsin! Its too early, where is our Pontiac Summer aka Indian Summer? |
My four-speed 69 is in the body shop now so can take a photo of the bare floor the next time I'm over there.

My cousin ordered one of the 4sp humps; from which place I don’t know, but his did not look anything like the factory piece. I have had both with and w/o console four speeds and the only two differences I can remember are the chrome trim ring w/o and no brackets on the floor pan w/o.
Yes the factory cut very crude holes. The first two things that happened to the Fisher bodies at Pontiac were the hole was cut for 4sp and then VIN installed. |

Interesting. Did the tunnel that your cousin ordered interefere with a console? I imagine (definately could be wrong) that all sheetmetal stuff comes from the same supplier. I will probably make the hole a little cleaner than factory, but just don't know if I am supposed to add the tunnel cover with the console going back in? Thanks for the responses. |
He has not started putting the car together, so I don't know about fit.
Yes all cars have the hump regardless of console or bench seat. |

I just went out to the garage and took a couple of pic's of my fourspeed tunnel and tunnel cover of my 69 Judge I have all tore appart now. Apparently someone had a clearance issue with the cover at one time. I have to straighten it, but I think that it is all factory cuts and cover. Looks like they cut out everything just inside of the lip on the cover. Mine is a console car, but I belive with or without the console these are all the same. I have had cars both ways and do not remember any differences. Hope this helps.

I have the correct 4 speed hump for a 69 with a consol. They do look like they were cut at the factory.

I just sold one on ebay and it was mint(someone got a steal)
The hole in tunnel was cut at factory using a cutting torch so yes it was very crude. Heres link to ebay auction so you can see a GM one thats unmolested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...7796996&rd=1,1 |
Dua Judges:
This has been brought up before but is worth repeating. Check out the following thread for some great info on 69 4spd floor cutouts. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ht=4+spd+floor I made a drawing of my original floor and posted it in the #9 post on the above thread. By the way the edges are not perfectly smooth. It appears they used a torch or plasma cutter to cut the hole at the factory. Wouldn't want anyone "overrestoring" their car with a nice smooth cutout. |

Thank you very much for taking the time to help. I wish I would have seen the eBay item! I will pass this along to my restorer and again, thanks! T. |

Cut Out
GTO John, RuffJudge and Rest:
I just wanted to again say thanks to the people who go out of their way to take photographs and post them on this site for the benefit of others. I know everyone of us is busy with one thing or another and I think it is pretty cool that people take the time to assist each other. I printed the photos and the measurements and will send them to my guy. |
No problem, glad to help. Good luck with it and keep us posted on your progress!
