formula hoods
 

I just started to remove the fiberglass hood on my 73 formula and since it will be off for as long as maybe 5 or 6 months while I redo the front end I was wondering what is the best way to store it? Can it be stored against the garage wall or can this warp the fiberglass somehow? I would think keeping it flat would be best but would also take up the most room. How do the rest of you store your hoods when thay are off your cars? Thanks for your opintions.

If you're going to lean it against a wall, stand it up on one of the sides, don't stand it on the back end. You can store it flat by putting it on the roof of your car, properly pad the roof of the car with a few old blankets, bedspread or whatever to protect the paint.

I think those hoods are known to warp no matter how they're stored, even while bolted onto the car they can warp.:(

B-man gave good advice. Hanging from the rafters with a couple cargo straps works for me. I run the straps the long way, not across the hood, kinda like a hammock. The 74 hood hasnt warped much, but the 71 and 72 hoods fit funky now. The 72 had a carb fire with the previous owner, that might account for it. The 71 is just beat so whoever beat it messed it up pretty bad.

The springs will cause the hood to bulge in the middle, its much worse with the springs for a steel hood. The glass hoods had lighter springs but still they bulge after time. if you have the room, standing it against the wall on a side works nice. I tend to run into things store like that.. up is often out of the way for me..lol.

I had mine off for a few months and I hung mine on the wall. I used a good sturdy hook screwed into a stuf in the wall and hung the hood on it by the hood latch area. I was nervouse about it at first, but it worked great. It's a two person job getting it on there and back down. I did this just because I was afraid of the hood falling over or someone kicking it by accident. Just another idea.

got a few laying around...yes back sides and vents are fragile...i believe 70/71 hoods have less bracing subjecting them to warping much easier than later models...

I've always stood mine up on the leading edge. No problems so far. Have seen many Formula hoods ruined by people standing them up on the points on the trailing edges.

Thanks for those ideas. I came up with this one. I'll keep it under my bed as long as my wife doesn't find out.
