tripower price...is this fair?

A friend has a '66 tripower complete setup with air filters, linkage etc. that he would sell me for 2000.00. Is this the going price on a setup like this? Its supposed to be restored and bolt-on ready to go.

Thanks,
Dan

If the numbers on the carbs (cast in - not stamped) match then it's about right.

dbiggs 03-19-2007 04:01 PM

So the numbers on all three carbs are supposed to be the same number? I'll look for that when I go see them. If they are different numbers does that mean the wrong carb was used or is it just not numbers correct?

2K is the going rate for one in the condition you described, they go for even more than that sometimes.

If this really is your friend selling it to you he should prove the legitimacy of the 3 carbs to you, non-Tri-Power carbs drop the value quite a bit.

So how can I tell they are legitimate? From previous post I guess the numbers should be cast in and should match between the carbs? What are the numbers supposed to be? I know nothing about tri-power setups and wouldn't know a correct one if I saw it. I do know the center carb on a '66 setup is larger than the outboards but thats about it.

Excellent! Thanks....now I am a tri-power expert....until it comes time to tune. :bolt:

Tuning Tripower setups is not difficult--carbs are all three very simple 2 bbl. Rochesters. When you attempt to work on yours, posting on this board will get you a lot of answers from knowlegable people. If you don't already have the casting numbers for the ends and center carb, let us know, so you can check correctness of the setup you're thinking about buying. I have three '66setups here to get numbers off of.

Nice quality with correct carbs - $2000 is a good price, complete.

Front and Rear carbs casting number (on center section) is 7029683 - small raised numbers in a circular pattern - not stamped. Fuel inlets point out towards passenger side.

Center carb casting number 7031575. Fuel inlet points out front.

All 3 are same size and 350 cfm on a 66 3x2.

Used correct carbs go for 300+ each (900+). Intakes 300-400. Then start adding in all the kits, breathers, lines and gizmos and etc.....

PY was offering a "complete bolt-on" 66 3x2 set up for $1700 with aluminum intake and aftermarket carbs.

Dan,
I do not want to hijack the thread, but here are a few more comments. The center carb on a '66 is higher than the end carbs, but the throttle plates are the same as the end carbs. Venturi is a little smaller for the stock center carb than the end carbs.

Baron, Your info is correct, and 350 cfm per carb sounds reasonable. But, the flow rate of the '66 Tripower setup is usually stated to be 750-800 cfm. That would put the individual carb flow rates at 250+ cfm. It's interesting to note that the modified Rochester 2bbl. carbs commonly used for circle track racing are described as 500 cfm.

I have purchased several restorable '66 Tripowers for $900-$1100 on ebay. By the time you color the carbs & plate linkage parts, get rebuild kits, buy fuel lines, PVC fitting, choke parts, and air cleaners, you will be at about $2000. Coloring the carbs is getting to be more expensive at a rapid rate. I have had several sets that someone painted the carbs. This makes restoration even more difficult.

If the numbers are correct and setup is as advertised...ready to bolt-on I guess I will jump on it for $2K. If it falls through...had anyone tried the setup from PY for 1700.00?

I installed the aluminum intake and aftermarket carbs on my 1967 GTO, if you go this route, you will have to buy the gas line kit, the stock 66 tri-power gas lines will not fit on the aftermaket carbs. It all works fine, but it looks different (a little goofy) with the aftermarket gas lines.
