Reproduction LeMans Sport Coupe emblems

Here they are:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...link:middle:us

They look good, but differ from the originals..

Original:

Reproduction:

This is the third auction that the seller has run for these emblems. Notice how the seller never mentions that they are reproductions, and even lists the original GM part number.. The sellers communication skills are poor at best. During the last auction he ran for these, I asked him numerous times if these were reproductions, and he said "If you don't want them, cancel your bid"..

Use caution when dealing with this seller... The last pair sold for $162.50...

Who sells the repops? Can they be had from PY or Ames?

Brian,

As far as I know, "missbird" is the only retailer at this point.

According to Scott W., they sell all sorts of reproduction emblems at Carlisle. I am going to try to find the seller when I am there next week. I will be sure to bust their balls for not answering my numerous questions regarding their origin.

Thanks, Rick...and keep me posted (I won't be doing Spring Carlisle this year). I remember back in 1994 when we found some originals for Dad's Can-Am. A POSI member in California answered my ad, said he'd take $45 each for them, shipping included. Dad initially balked at the price, but I talked him into it...I mean, we spent 4 years looking for them.

The last set just sold for $201!!!

I have ask this question before. Has anyone restored/painted the emblems? How did you do it and what was used? I have read through all the posts since joining and can't find where this was answered. Please tell me again or where it is posted.

Just paint them.

To repaint, just go to your favorite auto parts store and look up their paint matching colors. Pick the black and the orange/red you like. Use some artist brushes and fill it in. No big deal, just clean up the parts before you paint, and if you use too much paint, use some solvent to wipe off any excessive paint. I have used it on all the emblems including wheel emblems. It is not show car, but sure beats the faded ones.

Begin by polishing the raised chrome highlights with a small amount of metal polish, such as Wenol.

Then use SEM brand aerosol trim black, and carefully spray the emblem. Make sure you mask the "LeMans" area off prior to spraying. With reducer, carefully clean up the raised chrome highlights. Take your time and it will come out well. I have noticed that brush painting the black doesn't turn out as well. Remember, the areas around the "LeMans" area and between "sport" and "coupe" are supposed to be blacked out, unlike the current reproduction emblems..

For the red around the LeMans, use Testors 2724 stop light red model paint. It is very close to the original red. I compared the stop light red to my NOS emblems, and it was very close. Most people won't see the difference. Carefully brush the red in the proper area, or if you have an airbrush, thin the red and carefully spray the area..

I advise doing this to emblems without significant pitting.

Did you ever catch up with them at Carlisle? Would like to know if you were able to grille them on their followups to you. I also see on their auction they show the picture of the emblems vertically, not horizotally. Whenever I see ebay sellers doing weird things like that with either description or photos it raises a huge red flag. Let me know, my brother wants to get a mint set for his Can Am. Thanks, Craig

No.. I couldn't locate the seller.

However, board member Scott W. met the seller there, and saw the emblems.

He said that they looked good, but the seller wanted $200 a pair, because they were selling on E-Bay for that much. Mind you that the seller was misleading the E-Bayers in believeing that the emblems were GM..

Hate to Do It.

As all of you know my Can Am is in the body shop. Almost ready for paint and stripes. I took the front fender emblems home with me to paint. One side is in bad shape with pitting etc... and even broke in half between sport and coup. Well, I hate to do it but I am going to bid on the replicas on e-bay. This may come across wrong but, I would like to ask the group not to bid against me. I know we all need parts. I hope someday I can help someone else. Thanks, Kbars

I Agree with you, we should not bid against each other on these, the sellers reserve is only ever $75, so if we took turns we could bring the price down to where it should be. I'll be going to Fall Carlisle next week and I'll see what there story will be this time.
Scott
