My new project
 

Hi, I am new to the forum and recently have started on new project. I found a '67 in California that is 2 owner car and has been garaged for the past 18 years. The car is pretty clean with some minor rust in the lower windshield area, lower and partial side rear window area, and lower rear quarters. I'll post some pictures of what I am starting with. I plan on taking the body off the frame and getting it blasted, if I can find someone near me (its hard to find anything in Altus, Ok). After the blasting i guess that I will start the body work. I already have ideas on fixing around the windows, but the rear quarters have me somewhat undecided on the best way to fix. The rust is just in the bottom of the quarter behind the moldings, but both sides have some bondo (one area has about 1/4 inch thick patch and the other has about 1/8 inch) that I wonder if I should replace the metal in those areas as well or try to hammer out the low areas and re-smooth with filler. This is my first resto and I would like to do it right and once. Pictures below and I don’t know who decided in this cars past to paint it root beer brown!!:eek:

edit: Excuse the dirty garage, the floor is excellent including the trunk and I forgot the tail panel has a little rust by the light.

Welcome! You have a nice car. I like the root beer brown. I have one myself but mine doesn't have that nice white hood and door for accents! Looks like you have some repair work ahead but nothing too drastic it appears. I'd replace the bottom of the quarters with new metal. The molding covers a great deal of it. Welcome aboard. Nice car, then I'm partial to 67s :D . The front and rear glass areas look very familiar as i am giving my car a face lift as well . The people on this site are amazing in their knowledge . Best of luck with your restoration . :)

Your going to have an easy time with that resto.......congrats and a great starting point!

Once you remove the paint in the rusted areas you will be able to see the damage. Don't go and replace anything unless you have to. If the rust is real bad you may need new lower quarter patch panels, otherwise small holes can be welded, grinded and spot filled.

Well the car is almost completely torn down. I just have the front clip and running gear to remove. Next weekend I am going to drive to Dallas and rent a Soda Blaster for the weekend and strip her down to bare metal, inside and out including the bottom of the car. I just placed an order for $700 bucks worth of metal to repair the few bad areas after the stripping (rear quarter patches, tail panel, front and rear window bottoms, and right side rocker). I plan on using Por-15 on the bottom of the body, the interior floor, and the frame. The underside of the body and wheel wells will get a bed liner type material after the Por-15 as well. Anyone have any different suggestions?

Sheesh, in the mid west they call this a rust free car. I've seen some of the cars they buy to restore, and can't believe it can be done. This is also a really nice color, one I never thought about and I have a project to paint before long. Welcome to the best place in the world for Pontiac help. Check to make sure the Por-15 can be topcoated with the bed liner material you describe. Por 15 cannot be topcoated with paint products unless you use the tie bond product over it. (I forget the exact name) Some people (including me) do not like to cover the metal with underbody coatings because if you get rust you can't see it before it's too late. Just something to consider. An expoy primer/paint will work just as well as the Por 15, and if you have the equipment will cost less as well. Por 15 is a good product, but during my resto I think it's overrated. Lots of debate on the product in the forums. Again, don't go crazy on the metal patch panels. Lots of rusted areas can be repaired w/o panel replacement and your car's line will be far better.

Well there has been some progress on the car. It was completely stripped, the frame straightened and finished in Por-15. It has all new rubber bushings through out. The motor is back on the frame, but I am not going to do anything with it until next year. The body was soda blasted and is on blocks awaiting its body work. After I finish stripping the under side and painting it I will drop it back on the frame for most of the body work. I am currently trying to get the tail panel to line up correctly, but the left side quarter had a bunch of bondo so it isnt very straight. I hope to fix most of it with a lower patch panel. Another bad area is right behind the passenger door where it was caved in. I am hoping to pound this out without replacing metal.

Few more. Any tips on how to get the gap alligned on the deck lid?

My goal was to have it done in 6 months, but I dont think I will make it. My wifes parking spot in the garage will have to wait a little longer.
