Hey fellas, just got enough cash to finally replace my fuel system and I have some questions. My current fuel tank is gummed up and full of rust so thats the first thing I want to replace. The current one has a vent tube on the filler neck and the cheapest tank that I found states that it doesn't have a vent tube. What does the vent tube do exactly and is it really necessary? What else should I replace while Im doing this? Sender Unit? Im reusing the electric fuel pump thats already down there but what about the fuel lines? I was thinking about just shooting some compressed air through the lines to clear them but do you think I should replace them? I also have this crappy fuel regulator (the 20 dollar napa one) and I want to replace that for sure. Im not even sure its working in fact I think it might be part of the problem. What happens if I take it off and don't replace it? I think thats all the questions I can think of for now but by all means if I missed a part of the fuel system please chime in with some info or advice.

Its basically a stock 67 GTO. I bought it from somebody else and don't have much information on what they replaced and what was done to it. For the meantime im keeping it stock as I build up money. Im a college student so money is tight. In the future I plan to mod the hell out of it, so If I replace the fuel system now Id like something that can handle more power later on and still work fine for a stock setup.

All fuel tanks need to be vented or you will build up suction and you will stop drawing fuel. You can vent through a vent tube or with a vented cap. So if you use a tank without a vent tube you can either make a vent tube and braze it in using the old tank as a pattern or you can just use a vented cap. I would prefer the vent tube on the tank filler tube especially if you plan on improving performance in the future. For now I would throw that el cheapo electric fuel pump in the trash and get the correct factory AC Delco mechanical pump installed. The factory pump will do the job quite well for now until you bump the HP up quite a lot. You should have a steel fuel line from the tamk all the way to the fuel pump. That should do the job fine until you boost the power up quite a bit. I don't see a reason to do any upgrades now especially if your a student on a budget. The GTO is a factory high performance car and the factory stuff in proper condition will take you well into the 12's in the 1/4 mile. I would change out the tank, get the factory fuel pump installed and change out the rubber connector hoses. Save some money for repairs and emergencies.

Are you sure the new tank is missing the vent tube, & not the filler neck?
Companies like Ames sell the tank with or w/out the filler neck. You use your old neck, which has the vent tube.
