CAM CHOICE
 

Can someone direct me to a hydraulic cam for a 455 that would have the same characteristics as the 041 cam did in a 400? I have looked around at different manufacturers and I am not quite satisfied with anything I have looked at so far unless I overlooked something. Is it possible that I need a custom grind? Jason.

3079604 would be really lumpy. But not for power brakes. The 3078896 is a U/D version of the 041 with better lobes and more lift.

I was planning on no vacuum for brakes so I was going to keep the manual drums the way they are. I will take a look, thanks.

How would that 108 LSA be on the street though? I have an M-20 and 3:73 rear behind a .040 455 with stock polished rods and probably shouldn't take it over 6000 if I want it to live. Not really sure how it would react because I have not ever played around with this large of a cam before.

3078896 I run this cam in my 77 TA. 455 Stroker with AC and power brakes. I always use Rhoades lifters. Awesome set-up. Very nice, streetable idle. I had mine ground by Bullet on a 112.

The 455 Stroker in my GTO uses a Comp 286-AH8. 236/244 on a 108. Wicked idle with Rhoades. Another great cam. BTW, the TA has 3:23's, the GTO 3:73's.

I ran the 041 for awhile in my 455 T400 GTO and then switched to a Ultradyne 223-231-110 lsa-.460-480 lift cam and standard lifters. Nice lope at idle and better low to midrange power. Nice cam but was a little lumpy at idle in gear. With a 4 speed it would be a great cam. Performs close to the Crower 60916 but just a more lopey idle. Lunati still makes this cam.

What is the static compression ratio of your 455? The compression ratio has EVERYTHING to do with how well it will idle, and behave at lower rpm's.....Cliff

Guessing around 11:1.....I have a set of 16's and 670's and both sets of heads have 75 cc chambers. Also running flat top KB pistons. Sort of planned on running 50/50 fuel since it is just a weekend war machine. Do all these numbers sound about right to you?

If you want a "nasty" idle and strong mid-range/top end charge, Crower makes a 248/254/108 flat hydrualic cam that works well in high compression 455 engines. We have one installed in a friends 455, with mildly ported #670 heads, basically "stock" shortblock. It idles with a heavy "lope", with strong power from about 3500rpm's to 5500rpm's. It made around 460hp and 540 tq on the dyno.....Cliff
