Power Steering
 

My 64 GP has manual brakes and manual steering. It is now at my mechanic getting the front power disc brakes installed. I also want to put some power steering in it. What parts do I need? Is there a company that makes a complete kit for my car?
I will post some pictures of the disc set up when I get it back later in the week.

I don't think you're going to find a kit anywhere, but it's a straightforward job to get the components from a parts car and swap them in. You'll need the power steering box, the power steering pump and hoses, and the proper mounting brackets to bolt the pump to the engine. I believe you'll need different pulleys to accomodate the extra belt for the power steering pump as well. It's a good time to replace the rag joint connection between the box and the steering column, while you're at it.

There are places that can rebuild the box or make it a faster ratio if desired, Pittsburgh 64 just posted about a new steering box he got from Lee Mfg. in the last week or two.

What disk brake setup did you go with?

I'll be keeping an eye out for that. I did notice that Ames Performances makes reproduction ones. I'll be doing more research.

I went with a company called dfbrakes. I checked on my car yesterday, according to my mechanic they went on real easy. There was an issue with the booster. The firewall had studs sticking out for the old booster and the new one has the studs. So he has to get in there and remove the old ones. Also the kit didn't come with dust caps, so i have to call the company to see what kind I need. It's being worked on in the background so I don't think I will have it for about a week.

I would get an old pump with the other parts from the donor car even if you buy a reman. one. There is a problem with most of the ones out there now having the return line in the wrong location or at least last year there was. The ones listed for Pontiacs are actually Chevy. A number of us had a hard time finding a 'new' one with the return in the right location. If you have an old one you can just swap the can out to the new one & be done with it. NAPA etc. can get them. Just don't turn your core in until you make sure the return is on the side instead of in the center. I am pretty sure this is right for 64 as well as 65-66.

should have a used 67 pump and box, but doubt I have a pitman arm or brackets for a 64. PM me with offer.

I may be able to get most of the power steering parts from a donor car for $125.00. I am assuming that this is a complete setup. I'm emailing to verify that this is everything. Granted if it is would this a reasonable price?
