94/95 bonneville problem!
 

so my girlfriend's bonneville just dies randomly at any RPM while idling or driving. it's happened before on the highway and i dont want her to freak out and get into an accident because of it.

just before the car dies the check engine light flashes and it dings 3 times. silimar sound to that of a courtesy chime (when the doors are open and the key is in) but it's faster. the car will also start right back up as if nothing happened.

i pulled each plug off of the coil pack and post/wire #5 was all corroded. i had her start the car up and there was still spark arching from the post to the wire.

a car needs 3 things: fuel, air, spark. im convinced it's not the pump because the car will start back up and run fine. im not sure about the spark - can coil packs go bad, but still run? and i haven't checked the air filter yet. could it be the fuel filter?

i dont want to go throwing money at problems.

also all of her accessories stay on after this happens - lights, radio, etc.

Yeah, the only worse than having a girlfriend freaking out on the freeway is a Bonneville that decides you need to chillout while it strands you there.

Not sure what to tell you about this one but my 97 Bonneville used to do something like that but not always completly cut off. Except for the alarm chime and engine light that is. I never did isolate what was going on as it only did it a few times and would start up again after I either put it in neutral and started it up or stopped it, put in park, started and continued on. I suspected something with the crank sensor but hopefully someone with more useful input will chime in for you...

Check the #5 plug wire that is all corroded. You should probably replace it. If it is bad it could take out the coil and ign. module. The only 3 things that will cause the car to die and then restart are the fuel pump, ign. module, or the crank sensor. Go to an autoparts store and get the code read from the computer and that will give more info. about the problem.

I had my 1990 "blink" like you are describing. The battery cables weren't tight enough. I used a Vise Grip on the larger part of the battery bolt, not the hex, and I got them TIGHT! I haven't had any trouble since.
