Rear view mirror glass

I have a rear view mirror from a 1967 Lemans with a good frame but bad mirror glass. I took out the mirror thinking I could just get a new piece cut but it has been pointed out to me that the mirror from top to bottom is beveled going from 3/16 in to 1/16 in. Is it necessary that the replacement mirror glass be beveled or would a flat piece 1/16 in. work if somehow I could compensate for the additional space at the top in the mirror frame?

The bevel is most likely to enable day/night changes. Not sure but to me it makes sense....

Brad thank you for you response I believe you are correct. I guess my next question is...I can find rear view mirrors everywhere but does anyone know where I could just get the glass/mirror itself ?

In the early 1990s there was a man in Louisville, KY that restored these mirrors. I had mine done and he replaced the glass and restored the mirror for around $55.00.

Now that the 67 - 68 repro mirrors are selling for $49.00, I doubt that he is doing it any more. Or maybe he's the one making the new mirrors.

If I can find his name and contact information I'll post it.
