Type F or Mercon???
 

I just rebuilt my tranny (th400 w/ full manual valve body) and i am considering using type F fluid. I have always used mercon in the past but am wondering if F is better for racing applications. I did reuse the forward frictions and steels because they looked as good as new, would type f have a negative effect on the mercon soaked frictions?

Use type FA, it has the anti-foam agents. -Jim

Type F used to be for us tightwads who didn't want to waste money on B&M Trickshift.:D

But as time wore on my tranny guys seemed to go back toward the Dextron. Supposedly the Dextron lubes the tranny better. Usually if the trans is set up right to shift the way you want, you don't need the higher friction type F.

400's work well with anything. No problems mixing soaked frictions with new oil.

Someone somewhere a long time ago I think but a can't be certain-LOL told me the FA was the same as the B&M. -Jim

Trickshift is type F.When I was in high school in 83 a B&M rep came by the auto shop.In a conversation with my teacher he told him that Trickshift was type F with 10% synthetic.So I mix one quart of Red Line synthetic type F and standard type F.Works fine.

FWIW I was told the same thing concerning the Trick shift but instead of type F it was the type FA. The difference is the "A" is an antifoaming agent. I was also told the F or FA builds a slightly higher line pressure from being a different vescosity.

I've been leery to run the FA since I was told about it, WHY because the tranny that I lost 2nd gear in was built by the guy who recommended it. I'm still considering the change to the F or FA on the current transmission. JD

well i couldnt find and FA so i went with castrol type F. We'll see how it goes.

I've been running cheap type F for years in a th350 and now in a TH400. No issues whatsoever. I switched when I put in a B&M shift kit in my TH350 and they recommended type F. I have also heard the rumors about trick shift and it being type F based with some additives.

As an experiment, I ran synthetic Mobil 1 engine oil in 10W30 for a couple of years. I was told Mobil 1 synth transmission fluid was a red version of the engine oil, viscosity unknown. It seems to work well.

That's good stuff, that's what I run, or the Napa brand.
