'63 super duty hubcaps
what style was on the 63 catalina if you got the dog dish caps? i have seen several opinions, and was wondering what the proper caps would be.
a pic if ya got it would be great! thanks folks, davey |
63 SD cats were just another car back then.Could be ordered with 8 lugs, deluxe caps or poverty caps. The correct poverty caps show up on ebay all the time. Can post a pic when I get back from Norwalk.Tom

Just about anybody that finds a set of cheepie poverty caps suddenly has Expensive SD items. Just like Tom said SD cars came with all types of hubcaps and 8-lugs. You cant race with hub caps on anyways. Nearly all of the cars in pix didnt have any on at the race track.

Here's some pix of an nos 63 poverty cap. They were also used on 65 and 66 fullsize cars with 15 inch wheels and the heavy duty brake option.
|
Just FYI, you have to have the original wheels with the 'slots' for the clips that will attach these hubcaps. They will not just pop on like on later years.

I have a set of these hub caps but I was going to put them on the 14 in wheels I have. I guess I need the 15in wheels to make them work. Will any 5on5 steel wheel work?
|
Those will work on 14" wheels, but not 65 model wheels w/o the slots for the clips. I think 64 was the last year for the wheels with the slots for the clips. Maybe someone has a pick of one of the correct wheels that are needed for these caps. I do not. 65 models take the poverty cap like the GTO.
|
Thanks Jerry. I will keep an eye out for those wheels. Are they hard to find? Expensive when I find them? I got the caps for free so that helps out. I just wanted to keep two sets of wheels, one the rallys I have and two the steel wheels painted white with the dog dishes with some redlines.

If you want to run 15" rims with the 5" bolt pattern and 3 slots to fit your clips for the poverty caps, look for a 55 or 56 Olds/Pontiac in a salvage yard. These rims are 5.5" wide. I'm running these on the front of my 62 Cat. I had the centers taken out of my 14" wheels for the rear and had them installed on 15x7 rim with 4.75" backspace by Stockton. Currently running 205/75 tires on front and 235/70 out back. Neat looking set up. I think early 60s GM trucks wheels will work also. Good luck.

Simpliest & cheapist thing to do would be to find a set of the 'correct' dog dish caps. They appear on ebay from time to time. And then sell the ones you have. Those correct wheels are somewhat difficult to find, and fairly expensive to ship. The 65 dog dish caps are not as expensive as they used to be as there are repops available now.
|
Those hubcaps will work on both 14" and 15" rims. In fact, they were still used in 65/66 only on the big pontiacs equipped with HD brakes and 15 inch wheels. The standard dog dish was used on both A & B body cars when equipped with 14 inch wheels.

Those look the same as my 63 Tempest dog dish caps-are they?
