towing ability?
Is it possible to hook a trailer up to a 79 bird? I mean, it is leaf spring and engine, tranny, and rear end should handle it, suspension should be the only worry right? Does anyone know if its possible.
Not saying I'd do it, but it does have me curious. |
Yup. Back in the 70's and 80's there were direct fit trailer hitches for Camaro and Firebirds available at most auto stores. Being a unibody car GM's max towing capacity is 1000lbs but if the hitch was tied into the rear frame rails you could probably go higher without damage. I used to see to a '78 Trans Am around here with an Army surplus deuce and a half hitch mounted and he'd pull some pretty heavy trailers with that car.

wow, thats pretty cool. I wonder where you could get a hitch for the frame rails?!
|
I think it would have to be fabricated. All the hitches for F-bodies I've seen bolt to the rear bumper.

My 74 Formula at one time had a hitch on it, I just cut off the the two 5 inch braces that were welded to the rear frame rails to get the new exhuast to fit. Also as their a couple holes in the rear bumper. When I got the car the wires were still their for the plug and it had air shocks on it. Probably why the original motor was long gone as must of blown it up towing.

Hmmm thats funny, I just sold a tow hitch that came off a 1979 Camaro. It bolted onto the rear frame rails and the bumper brackets.
Over here they tow caravans with them to camping meets, so yes ... they are great tow vehicles :) |
Towing a trailer is a GREAT WAY to RUIN your driving experience & suck the unibody out of shape. If you like rattles, clunks & waterleaks,it's a great way to go.
T/A's & Firebirds are Sportscars/Ponycars/Musclecars but NOT TRUCKS! Just buy a truck for towing your trailer. Your T/A will love you for it. |
trailer hitch
If you need a Firebird/TA hitch,I just removed one from a 74 Formula.$25.00 + shipping from Dallas,GA.30157.

Thats why I sold the tow hitch in the first place - its a sportscar to me ... not a truck ;) Then again - I must say that caravans in Europe are not Airstream-sized :) http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1393/...523aa5b2_b.jpg |
Hitch for TA
I have a hitch on my 76 TA and have used it a few times and it worked out good. I have pulled a mid size utility trailer and also pulled a car dolley with a mid size car with no problems. The hitch on my car mounts under the car in 4 places 2 are close together right behind the safety chain eyelets and the other 2 are at the end of a long bar that goes behind the bumper and mounts on the right and left sides of the car. My hitch is a Draw-Tight Gross WT 2000 LBS and tongue WT 200 LBS

I found the pics of the tow hitch I sold; here they are:
