stock axle replacement
 

can anyone tell me where to find new axles to replace my stock ones in a 68 firebird. I have searched and tried different aftermarket sources and havn't found much. Any links, part numbers, suggestions would be appreciated.

New, you're prob best off buying a new pair of Mosers, esp if your Bird's rear is a factory HD Safe-T-Track. The HD Safe-T-Track 8.2 rears, besides the nodular center housing, had HD axles & finding a pair of unchewed HD Safe-T-Track axles is next to impossible.

Good used, even the std duty Pontiac 8.2 sealed bearing axles are getting very hard to to find that aren't chewed up under the axle bearings. Every year I sell a half dozen or so of good used sealed bearing Pontiac 9.2 axles with new bearing pressed on. Usually intall new studs too. Unless the old sealed bearing is pressed off, very hard to tell if the sealed axle bearing 8.2 axle is any good. If chewed, I pitch 'em.

not clear why having a chewed surface under a press on bearing is a problem? if the bearing runs true, then everything is good, right? it is not an area that leaks are an issue? if the surface has a slight groove, why not put a speedi-sleeve on it first, then install the bearing using induction heating, not with a press, so the sleeve remains in place. the inner bearing shaft is supposed to remain fixed with respect to the axle itself, so why the concern?

Stick with Moser, Strange or Williams. Forget the replacement stuff.

thanks for the replies everyone. I looked into each suggestion. Anyone have any opinions on the Alloy USA axles? I guess my original post made it sound like i wanted stock axles. I meant aftermarket replacements for the pontiac axles. I have personally experienced what OPH talked about in that i have had 3 axles ruined due to the bearing spinning on the axle in the last 2 years. The first was a normal bearing failure due to wear, the second was 1 of 2 spares that i had with a good bearing already installed. I think the second one had hidden damage on the bearing surface. The third axle i replaced the bearing and inspected the axle myself and all was good. It spun the bearing and became very loose on the axle without ruining the bearing after 500 or so miles. The axle housing was professionally welded and checked for straightness so that was ruled out as a possible problem. Only thing i can come up with was a soft axle or substandard bearing. I have no history on any of the axles i used so anything is possible.
side note: anyone have any idea what the rear end would be worth to someone restoring a car to original components. It's out of a 67 HO firebird 400 with 3:90 gears factory. 4 spider gear carrier and dual factory traction bars. It's complete, welded tubes, black powder coating with 3:55 gears. Not looking to sell unless price in crazy high, just curious.
