I have a 396 that I would lkie to know what it goes to #10509xe thank's

looked at the car engine suffix codes which are two or three letters, but no factory installed blocks start with X as the first letter. There was an EX and other codes, just no X_. anyway, there are lots of codes on chevies, so get us a block casting no., date code, assembly code, engine suffix codes, and I can help you out.

I looked again and on the pass front side it reads 10509xe the i could be a backwards 7 or a T. on back 3935440 , conv2 and something i can't read . Wand to sell to buy parts for my gto's but don't know who much it's worth if anything. Thanks so much for your help.

The other code is T0509??, The motor is from the Tonawanda motor factory built May 9th. You have to look further for the exact year. There is a block casting date usually on the back ledge passenger side and will look like D 12 9 for April 9, 1969. It will be some date before the build date obviously. The last two could be CE which means it is a Crate Engine or warranty replacement engine.

The xe is for sure it's eays to read up front. I think I'll load it up on a truck and take it to a chevy dealer and see if they can figure it out thank's fo all the help.

It's a 1968 396 for a truck. 310 HP rating.

Johnta1, Thank's now I know what I'm dealing with. Do you have any idea what it's worth?

The 5440 blocks were also used in the base 325HP Chevelles in 68. Even though they were used in pick-ups there are still considered pass motors. If it's a core then $500 or less if a good stock runner maybe $1000 is my guess.

truck blocks have the word 'truck' cast into them. lowers the value when in a car even if block casting no. was correct.
