Rally II Trim Ring Removal?

Please, no laughing....I've worked on cars "forever". But, is there a really good or a special way to remove the trim ring from a 1969-vintage Rally II wheel, so the ring isn't damaged? These are the approx. 3" deep rings. I'm interested in getting my trim rings off (never have), without bending the perimeter rim nearest the tire, due to prying around the outer edge of the ring. Thanks for any help. John

I'd try a large flat head screw driver. I use no caution when I remove mine and have never bent one.

Perhaps wrapping some tape over the blade of the screwdriver, or using a rag on the end of it.
