Scratched glass...
 

The driver's side quarter glass on my Tempest T-37, is scratched beyond recognition (a felt came off many years before I purchased it). I've got it fixed to where it won't scratch it anymore, but I'm curious about fixing the glass. I purchased another glass, but it also has a smaller, but still noticeable scratch (it was really cheap). Is there any way of repairing these. The local shop I took it to said the scratches were too deep. Or at the very least, can they be minimized.

One other thing, both pieces are Soft-Ray tinted pieces, does that make any difference in polishing, Is the tint a film on the outside or is it uniform throughout the entire thickness of the glass?

can you minimize LIGHT scratches? yeah sure a little. if you can catch it with your finger nail, it aint comin out. worked for over an hour on a d/s tinted piece that I just won on e-bang from 04hemi??.was decribed as good glass, bid with confidence! the whole 9 yards, anyway, it is the 2nd piece I have bought, got $50.00 in this one. will throw it out later this week. has about a 14 inch scratch right thru the middle. I mean, highly noticeable at 10 feet. left positive feedback, but commented glass was junk. seller responded that I got a good deal on GOOD glass????? I tells him I bid with confidence BUT, it aint even driver quality. so he blocks me?? ha,ha.........any other 100%ers ever been blocked?? sorry for the rant adam, but with glass, there is just no in between and for the most part, no magic repair. slash:rain:

I had a similar eBay experience with this glass, said good driver condition with some minor scratches (which is still better than the glass on my car). But the scratch isn't minor, but that's not even what upset me. The thing that got me was that I paid $25 for shipping, and it comes wrapped in folded up cardboard and tape, not even bubble wrap. I'm lucky it came in one piece.

Oh well, I'll polish out what I can. What should I use to minimize it? What about the stuff windshield shops use to repair small chips, can that be used?

Rule of thumb is if your finger nail can "nick" the scratch (get hung up) then it cant be sanded out.

Eastwoods sells a glass polishing kit I have used with success on small scracthes.

Check there site as it may have helpful info.

Serium Oxide is the powder used to polish out glass scratches. A special sanding pad on a DA sander with plenty of water will knock it down some and then you use the Serium Oxide powder with water to form a loose paste and keep the buffer moving to avoid heat and pretty decent success can be had but as posted above if one feels the scratch with ones finger nail you have your work cut out for you but the Serium Oxide Powder is the only glass polish know to work. It is a light Salmon color and can be purchased through Eastwood Corporation, they also sell the special sanding disc's.

The scratch on the "new" glass isn't too bad, but it does catch the fingernail, but at least it isn't on the car, so I'll have plenty of time to work on it before I put it on the car.:cool:

welp, here goes again. just won another tinted glass. this time to replace the heavy weld pitted d/s rear 1/4 window. seller say's nice. got my fingers crossed. ya know, I have a link to an outfit that is selling NEW, tinted 1/4 glass. they are out of WI. price for glass is okay, like $49.00 shiping expensive.like $35.00. I was afrainfd the tint would not match with original d/s front window?. still have the link if anyone would like it.cheers

I'd be interested in it, do they make other glass too, doors & rear window? My back window has some DA sander marks from when the previous owners "got maaco" :doh: . It is always good to have options...other than used "driver quality" glass.

ABE, I guess my 60 day window for saved info in "my e-bay" has expired. cannot find link? anyhow, I have seen them list more than once so next time I see link, I will post it. as I recall, they had chevelle or other glass also. there is "new"rear glass on e-bay now, but if I remember it is in excess of 325.00? mine is pitted also, I was going to swap it some day. guess I better start hunting for a good replacement

My Dad had to replace the driverside tinted door glass in his 71 T-37. He got a brand new door glass from the local glass shop, and it matched the other original windows just fine.

You want to know the sad part? The original tinted door glass was just fine, but the lower part of the door was rusted beyond what we felt would be an undetectable rust repair for the resto, so we threw the complete door away before we got the PHS and realized the car was ordered with tinted glass( Picture Homer Simpson....DOH!!!)

Call you local auto glass people to price the door glass. If your going to install it yourself(which is very easy) ask to talk to the owner of the place and see if you can get a cheaper "cash & carry" price, out the door.

Slash has it right, if your finger nail catches on it you can forget it. Tempered glass is impossible to polish. Windshields made of laminate can be done, but as far as the rest of the glass which is all tempered, no go!
