70 GRAND PRIX VINYL ROOF PREP
:confused13: I will be installing a vinyl roof on my Grand Prix. My question is, what is the proper method of refinishing the sheet metal for maximum longevity. The roof and sail panels have been prep'd for refinish. Should the area under the vinyl be clearcoated ? Also, while I am here, since this vehicle was not OE with a vinyl top, I am looking for all the mouldings for the vinyl top install.
Thanks, jcg500plus |
I think it should be painted just like the rest of the car. You'll probably have to scuff it up a bit before gluing the top on. That's what I THINK is the right way anyhow.
Back when these cars were made, they just barely fogged any paint on the roof area if the car was scheduled to recieve a vinyl top. Just overspray really. That's probably why they started rusting within a few years of leaving the dealership. |
I just painted my GTO and asked that same question. I was told to paint and clearcoat, so I did.
I epoxy primed, urethane primed, base & cleared. I only applied one coat of base and one coat of clear. My 2 cents worth.................... |
If using a base/clear system, you MUST clear coat. Otherwise, the glue will dissolve the base.

When I prepped mine, I shot 2k urethane primer, then 1 coat of single stage on the roof. I scuffed it with scotchbrite, wiped it down and installed the top. The rest of the car got bc/cc.

Finally got to this point. After a delay due to starting a new project I am back to this. I contracted Ralph's Auto Tops and Upholstery to do the top. Ralph came to my house for the installation. What a job he did. He is in the Orange County New York area. Highly recomended! If anyone is in need of very high quality upholstry work, convertible or vinyl tops get this guy! he can be reached @ 845-567-9101.
I did the mldg. over in black powder coat. I think it looks great. Your own choice here. I have a few shots posted for you to see. I will be on this project full bore to complete by spring. |
Looks like Ralph does nice work & makes house calls. Had a 70 GP in high school and to this day I still kick myself for selling it. Good luck hope you get back on the road for spring. Saltman

I opted out on going back with the vinyl on mine .I kicked it around forever. That looks real nice.If you need anything let me know I have some stuff left over.Isnt it neat when you hire a pro to do a job and he does it. It makes it alot easier to get the wallet out to pay when you see someone in the top of their field.LOOKS NICE
