LT1 or LS1 Swap

Is this a forum where it is safe to discuss engine swaps without fear of reprisal?

Where might I be able to find some info on swapping an LT1 or LS1 motor into a '64-'72 A-body?

Just kicking an idea around. I searched the net a bit without much luck.

The LS1 is where its at. In my opinion it is one of the best motors ever made. You can find info at www.ls1tech.com supposedly a LT1 with full bolt ons will get spanked by a LS1 with a lid and cat back. That's the consensus on LS1tech and from racing a few with my WS6 I believe it. It wasn't even a challenge

Of course the LS1 is a superior motor top the LT1. No argument there.

However, complete LT1s, with trans, can be had for under a grand. Try finding an LS1 for that price.

I am a member of LS1tech. Is there anyone on there who has transplanted such a motor into a 60's or 70s car?

yes you can find iron block 6.0 liter versions (lq9,lq4) of the alum block 5.7L (ls1,ls6) for about a grand and only gain about 90 lbs over the alum block. and yes alot of guys over on ls1tech have swapped (lsx type) engines into older muscle cars just check in the conversions and hybrids section. gm keeps adding to the ls family of engines there are probably 15 different sizes of engines setup 50 different ways to fit in most of gm's fleet

i know if you do the swap with the 6speed you cut out most of the trans tunnel.

I just purchased a 1981 T-top 4spd trans am with the 305 motor in it. I already have an LT1 i put in my S10 pickup several years ago that is going to come out and go in there. My plan is to put a six speed in.

Heres some pics cause everyone like pictures

Will the trans be able to handle the power the newer drive line could throw out?

avewhtboy, where did you get the front bumper cover for that s10? I need one before I paint mine. But unlike most folks, mine has a 426hp 350 Pontiac in it.:D btw, is that a 68 Catalina in the background of the T/A picture? What's up with it?

Bull, If you was to do this swap, go straight to the ls1 series. Find a wrecked truck with the 6.0 and you will have everything as far as computer, wiring for plug and play, etc.

goquick...i got the front cover from Godfather Customs with the full kit for
the truck but I think you can get just the front....and I don't know anything about the pontiac in the background as I live in GA and the car was in Idaho....i paid someone to take a look at the T/A for me but could give you a number for the guy if you want to ask.

I have a 6.0 4l80e in my 68 lemans convert. I am just finishing a 5.3 4l60e in my 89 shop truck. Jim

Bull, theres a whole entire conversions and hybrids section on LS1tech. Tons and tons of LS swaps into a-bodies.

I would definately go with the ls1. Much better motor in my opinion.:)

LT1 in an 86 Grand Prix

Does the LT1 use the same motor mounts as a stock 305 in an 86 Grand Prix
What would be the best car to pull a LT1 out of for this swap?

Yep, same mounts. Best car would be a 95-97 Camaro or Firebird. The 94, 94's don't have the upgraded vented opti's.

lt1 is just an overrated sbc. everything mount wise bolts up the same way. Go with the 95 if you do as it has less issues than obdII of 96 and 97.
