Hey everyone ! I have a fresh big block, new starter, new battery, and it cranks over fine and fires , but after it warms up and I turn it off, it turns over very sluggish and won't fire till it cools down a bit... Whats going on ?

THE STARTER MIGHT BE GETTING HOT FROM THE HEAT OFF THE MANIFOLDS AND WOULD FIRE UP TILL IT COOLS.DO YOU HAVE A HEAT SHIELD ON UR STARTER

6D6GOAT 01-24-2008 03:35 PM

what kind of starter???

Colorado_Goat 01-24-2008 03:56 PM

Timing may be pulled back too far. What do you have it set at?

Andre 01-24-2008 03:56 PM

This is not unheard of with a fresh motor and super tight tolerances combined with a less than great starter and insufficient cold cranking amps.

Try a battery with a CCA of 1000. Another option would be a high quality hi torque starter.

I have the very same problem...

At cold start, it fires up very quick, just a turn of the key, but after some driving, it starts to turn over very slow.. and sometimes need more than a few try's before getting started.

Last week, I drove it for like 1/2 hour in a very warm day (35°C), I stop it for like 20 minutes and when I tried to start it up again... slow turns.. until the batery get dead.

I have to use a spare batery and cables and it finnaly fire up... then I drove it home (5 minutes, not long enought to charge a dead battery), and let it rest. After the weekend, I come back with a fresh battery and cables. I was very surprised to see my car firing up at the first turn of the key (before jump-starting it), just like it does any regular day.

Only conclusion, there is another problem, not just the battery charge.

Had any one suffered/solved this problem before???

Thanks!

Your battery cables might be too small, or you might not have the GM high torque starter.

I think I have the original 67 400" starter.... Is there any way to confirm it?
Maybe old cables could be the problem.

Also make sure all grounds and connections are good, and positive cable is shielded from heat of manifolds. heat shield on solenoid would also help. Hot start problems are pesky

Get a hi-torque mini starter.... i had the same problem and have not had it since i changed the starter.

thats what i was getting at :)

Had my stock starter converted to hi-tork and never have had a problem. Running headers, 464 cubes, roller cam, etc. I do have a heat shield on the starter.

I had this same problem also and what fixed mine was to use a remote solenoid (Ford).

I got this info from a posting on this site but i cannot find it.
if you search remote solenoid there is lots of very good info.

Are your points adjusted right?,,,, i know with new motors sometimes the timming needs ajusted to a new mark ,,, try having some one crank it over when warm while you turn the distributor a bit to see if you can find the right spot.

Yeah, thats it, make sure you have good battery, properly sized cables and at least, a high torque starter. Also to ensure fast start-ups make sure the tune up is good, meaning timing and dwell, cap, rotor ,wires and plugs. Also make sure that the carb is O.K., as there could be some flooding or vapor locking happening. Do any thing to keep the running coolant temp in an acceptable range. Pontiacs tend to heat up the starter and solonoid from the exhaust heat. Some cars came with a heat shield on the starter. Aftermarket parts can help but I like keeping things factory. Good luck

Heat sink will cause that issue plus poor grounds, I would start with those first.

Make sure your ground is good to the engine or frame - scrape paint and other material off and get the bolt nice and tight, cable should be at least 4 awg. Make sure alt. ground is good as well. If that is good already and assuming the engine tune is good then heat sink could be the issue. You can fab. an aluminum cover to keep heat off the sol. or get a wrap like DEI makes for example to cover the unit. I had the issue then went to a Hi Torque mini starter.

I also used the remote solenoid and adjusted my timing. No more problems. Got the remote from Summit.

If everything is in good condition and that you have adequate wires sizes and good ground and you're still having the problem, get a RobbMc mini starter. Very high quality and also gives you increased clearance if you have headers.

Sorry to bring this tread back from the death, but had any one tryed this starter?
