Secondaries not opening?
 

So after a long while, my engine is completely running. I just did a final valve adjustment to fix one ticking. This is a street 350 with 4bbl Q-Jet/stock iron intake, and dave ray small body hei dist. The q-jet was done by Jeff Walker. Can I get some suggestions what would cause the secondaries not to open?

choke not all the way open

Check and see if you can open them manually. Make sure the choke is open and check to make sure the gasket is not interfering....BB

Are the throttle blades opening? If not check the gasket to the intake, for binding. If the secondary airvalve is not opening, check to make sure that the lockout from the choke is not interfering. Also make sure the choke pull-off is releasing.

How do you know they are not opening? They will not open just revving the engine in neutral.

The choke is opening, and runs great on the primaries. When driving it around town or on the freeway it downshifts and runs great but no noticeable change. I never said anything about revving the engine in neutral.

With the motor off, open the secondary airvalve by hand. Have someone depress the gas pedal all the way. Look and see if the secondary throttle blades open up, or if they are stuck. Also make sure the air valve spring is not too tight. Make sure you have the correct choke pull off as well.

While your depressing the throttle make sure the cable is capable of opening it up all the way

Well I would have called Jeff and asked him for his opinion/advice. He is one of the good guys here and I assume will work with you to solve the problem.

A qjet that is close to perfect in setup you will neither hear nor feel the secondaries as they open.

I agree. I haven't seen any evidence yet that the secondaries AREN'T opening. That is the point I was trying to make in my previous post.

I have heard that you shouldnt feel them open,but for a street car 'feeling' the secondaries open when you nail the throttle is part of the fun.For a strip car,different story.

You shouldn't reall feel them "kick-in". When set correctly the transition onto the secondaries should be smooth and seamless. Even so, when going to full throttle, you should see a dramatic increase in engine power output as it gets into the higher rpms.

If the engine power is WAY off, feels "flat" clear across the rpm range, etc, it still doesn't mean that their is a carburetor problem. If the mechanical throttle plates work during a static test, and the secondary airflaps aren't binding on the link, and open freely by pushing down on them, the problem is likely someplace other than the carburetor......Cliff

Yes, I think everything is actually fine, the transition is very seamless. Jeff Walker does great work.
