1979 GP SJ 4-speed....How many?

This car is for sale again on eBay. I know we talked a little bit about this car last year in another thread. Does anybody know how many 4-speed GP's were produced in 1979?
The eBay ad claims 233, does anybody know if that number is total 1979 4-speed GP production or 4-speed SJ only?

It would mean the whole 79 GP run.

iowapub 03-12-2008 10:33 PM

yep, total of all 79 Grand Prix 4 speeds. I for one think this is a good price for a one owner low milage 4 speed.

I agree with iowa, that is a great deal and I'm surprised that it didn't sell last time. Unless the minimum was higher than that before, I can't recall.
If I was serious about aquiring it (and I would be if I was wealthy), I would wait till the last half hour, and put the minimum bid on it.
Perhaps someone has already hatched that plan.:ranger:

Anybody know how many '78 manual trans GPs were built?

I had a '78 GP (not SJ or LJ) with a 231 buick V6 & a three speed with bench seat & no power brakes (no A/C, radio, or other options, either). The last iteration of the car was a 400 sbc/T56/9 inch w/3.89s. I sure miss it. I knew it was rare, just wondering how rare.

In 78, the Lemans line offered a 3 spd stick and 4 spd stick, but only on the six cylinder.

As far as the 1978 G-body w/manual trans;
I've personaly spotted only two or three Monte Carlos, one Cutlass, and never a Grand Prix or Regal.
Grrrrs' car is the only '78 GP stick I've ever heard of. I'd be willing to bet it was one of less than half dozen built, stripped down like that. Probably 200-300 total manuals built that year, based on over 200,000 units sold.

I wish I still had it :( It was definately a factory stick car. The trans was not original (yellow paint stick markings on it), but everything else appeared original. The car had manual brakes when I bought it & I converted it to power. I had to modify the brake pedal to accept the booster assy. That was about 20 yrs ago. I still have the column & pedals out of it, though. I parted the car & sold the shell. It was then used a a dirt track car.

I knew a guy back when I had mine that has a '79 SJ with a 301 4 spd. His mother bought it new. Last I saw it (about 15 yrs ago) it was pretty hammered. I heard he was restoring it, but I wouldn't even know how to get a hold of him. I'd love to find it.

By the way...I saw one regal ('78-80 style) in a salvage yard. They wouldn't sell me any parts off of it.

The Regals and I assume the G/P's also had a 5 speed available as an option in 78.

I knew of a Cutlass Diesel with a 5 speed that was in my housing plan. It was a Calais, with buckets, Ttops, etc. It was either a '78 or '79 - single headlight style.

Back when I had my GP, I knew of every manual trans G body in the area. There were a few Malibu wagons, a friend of mine still has a Malibu 2dr (very rough condition), and 1 or 2 Elcaminos.

I had heard of a '78 442 w/5-speed. Didn't know they (5sp) were also available in '79. Check out this rare survivor in the current OLD CAR TRADER
http://www.bigostreetrods.com/1979%2...%20Cutlass.htm

They have 'lowered' the price to a more realistic $7950 in the magazine.
I can't say I'm crazy about the color. And I would assume the W-30 wheels are not original. But I'd love to have this in my fantasy collection.;)

x2. I like the color, though. I wonder how many miles is on it. Not that it really matters to me, but it definately would make it worth a little more with ultra low mniles on it. $7950 is still kinda steep IMO. Rarity does not necessarily make something valuable, there has to be a demand as well. These G-bodies are starting to get some cred, but I still don't think they are bringing big $$ yet.

I would love to have it though.

That car would be a 260, which wouldn't fall out of an airplane with a brick attached, think a 307 was weak? Drive a 260! Of course a 350/400/455 is just a swap away.

Randy, that 260 would be just fine and dandy with me.:)
I drove a Ventura with a stock 260, for over 100,000 miles. And it had a 3-speed stick, BTY. Loved the gas mileage that car got.

Anyway, that 5-speed wouldn't stand up to anything bigger than a 260-307. I heard once, they used the same (5sp) transmission as the Monza/Sunbird in those bigger cars.

I agree, but real Olds power in a Gbody Olds is good for me. I'd do a mild 403 with a T56, or even a Tremec TKO in it & leave the rest stock. Such an easy swap. Almost bolt in.

I believe you are correct.

There's a guy on the gbodyforum with a 79 GP 301 4 speed, says factory original. He leans heavily to switching the 301 over to a 350. I advised him that ruining the "numbers correct" status will diminish the value to "just another g-body", but it fell to deaf ears.
A fool and his money soon part.

Could you post a link? I am not familiar with the forum you mention.
I agree it would be a shame to put an uncorrect motor in one of those, because of it's rarity. I hope that is not a SBC 350 he is contemplating.
Wouldn't be so bad if someone swaped a 350 Poncho into one, as long as it was made to appear stock.

srercrcr 04-08-2009 08:13 PM

just type gbodyforum.com and check the forums for "Should I keep my 301?"

6 Grrrs 04-08-2009 08:19 PM

If you are gonna put a 350 poncho in it, you might as well go 400 or 455 Poncho. They all look the same.

Take Care,
