1.25" front sway bar on '64 gto
 

trying to install a 1.25" aftermarket sway bar from PST. having a couple of problems. 1) mounted in the stock position, the sway bar hits the idler arm. 2) also the end links (bit longer that stock) seem to be impossible to install. they interfere with the uppper ball joint nut. i cut them down ~1/2" and still can't get them on.

Question: do i need to drill another hole in the frame to slide this thing back a bit? don't see any other way around this... thks Tim

It takes some effort to get it mounted. How do you have the car supported now? Is it sitting on stands under the frame and front wheels hanging down???

yes. front is on jackstands wheels hanging.

my retainers/clamps dont allow for any fore/aft movement. they are slotted, however, my bolts both end up on the inner most position in the slot. hence, no adjustability and it hits the idler arm.

okay.... try this.
With the car still on stands. Put your floor jack under one of the lower control arms and raise it up to almost a normal height or until the spring starts to take most of the weight on that side. Then see if you can get the end link installed for that side. Then go to the other side and repeat. Will help alot if you have a helper to work the jack and you guide the bar and endlink into its place.
Once you get the both endlinks tightened up and get the full weight on the front suspension you should be okay.

There should be very very little fore or aft movement of the frame mounting bracket. With a big bar like the 1.25 there just isn't much room left for those brackets to move. Notice how much less bushing material on the sides there is with the bigger bar??

You using poly bushings?

What application is the bar for, i have a gm unit 1 1/4 on my 65 w/no interference or insall problems.

I also have a 1.375 GM style (HO Racing) front bar, with no interference issues AT ALL with the idler arm......

What brand of bar is it? Pics?

Me three! No issues when I installed either the 1.25" bar or the 1.375 HO bar on my 64 GTO.

I think if I had the stock idler arm on, which is smaller, it would be fine. The piece a got from PST is a bit beefer. I'll take some pictures. thks tim
