'77 Super T-10 Help
 

Anyone know what these numbers mean? I've searched but not much luck. I'm hoping this is the original 4-speed to my '77 Formula W72. Mine has 5 rings on the input shaft. When I bought the car 3-4 years ago. The guy said the tranny is a fresh rebuild. It has been sitting in the shed so it rusted a little. I have never messed with a 4-speed so I need to do alot of info searching. Thanks for any help!! There's bigger pics on the first link. The ones below are a little photochopped.

NOW,FIRST THINGS FIRST!

Get our your wire brush or wire wheel & clean off that rust on your input shaft RIGHT NOW! Get some oil on it,ASAP!

Seriously,I don't believe that transmission is the original for your 77 W72.
As I recall,the "correct one" should have only TWO cuts in the input shaft spline. (2:64 low gear)
FIVE cuts in the input spline will net you a 3:?? low gear. (need to check my charts on that one)
Those ones were generally put behind the smaller cube/lower HP motors to make them seem faster.

The 1/2" x 3" pad on the top of trans. in your first picture should have a partial vin stamped on it & I'm betting it AIN'T yours.

Does your 77 still have it's original 3:23 rear axle?

Sorry...I'll get to the rust tommorow!! those are the only numbers I can find. I don't see no VIN stampings. From my searching, the five rings meant a corvette ST-10. I'm not sure what rear gears are in it. It has the right code & posi. The car is buried in a storage unit as of last Saturday.

Probably a 2.88 first gear ratio, not really a good ratio for use behind any high torque Pontiac engine...........probably is out of a Vette. Might last OK if you dont run it too hard........just normal street driving.

The original Super T10 would have had a 2.43 first gear ratio

Is this tranny any good? Can I change the guts to run on a Pontiac? Was the original 2-groove the better ones? I was going to run an extra motor ('78 W72/.030 mild 400 (comp XE262H) that I have and keep the WA code 400 on the engine stand. Maby I should open up the 69K WA motor and see if it's been rebuilt. I have a new balanced assembly with .030 trw's & '69 crank/rods.

The original 2 groove trans would ultimately be stronger,because the gears have LESS teeth which make them bigger,but you shouldn't have any problems with it behind a "mild" 400 if you change gears using the clutch & don't sidestep the pedal for that "extra FAST" start!

With the TALL low gear,you will LOVE how fast it leaves the line,but the revs DO climb fast & be ready for second.
