Rocker Moldings Early to Mid Year ?
 

There is a thread in Body Section on 67 rocker moldings. The question is when did Pontiac switch to the rocker moldings that lip into the door sill area, was it early in the model year or late? It would be nice to narrow the date down so 67 owners know which is correct for their build date.

My '67 has the original moldings (type 2), the ones that screw in the door opening.
Build date is November 16, 1966 and it was manufactured at the Baltimore plant.

I also owned a '67 GTO sport coupe (2 dr pillar sedan) and that car had the earlier style of rocker moldings. That cars build date was October of 1966 and it was also manufactured in Baltimore.

Thanks 67 Tiger :). My car was built in Pontiac 3rd week of February 67. It has on the left side, early style as that left rocker was replaced at sometime. The right has the later screw on style. So it was between the week of when your post car was built in Oct. to when your current car, was built in Nov. Since both cars were assembled in the Baltimore plant, it is early model year change for sure.

My 67 Pontiac built in 2rd week Febuary 67 has the late style.

My 67 rag top wrap in also, build date 3rd week in May.

my 67 post coupe oct 66 early style built in mi sold 45 mins from my house new in elmira ny my 2nd gto purchased from original owner in 1975

My '67 GTO was built in Baltimore with Invoice date of 10-27-66.

The car is totally original, unmolested and has the Early Style Rocker Moldings that hang on the rocker panel.

My previous research seems to indicate that the switchover at Baltimore occured around the first week of Nov, 1966.

Other GTO assembly plants may have had earlier or later switch over dates.

I would love to see a pic of the latter style (which is held by the screws). I assume you cannot remove the early style and install the latter style with ease?

You can easily replace the early style with the later style, which is probably one reason GM made the change. Going early style from late style would be more difficult and leave screw holes in the door sill.

Later style that cuts into the door sill uses less mounting clips along the rocker panel than the early style.

Who sells good later style mouldings?

I have seen those in PY's site but I didn't know that they were for the later design since the description doesn't talk about it. I assumed it was the early design. Just curious, is anyone making the early design then?

The early design is not being reproduced and probably never will be. This was a very challenging item for Ames to reproduce because of its size. It was in the works for several years.

The early style uses more mounting clips, specifically under the driver's door.

Buy the later style as they are much simpler to install.

Thanks for the quick reply. Since the car has some very pretty early style, I'm in no hurry to become period correct and can live with the holes in the rocker for a bit longer. Maybe during the winter I'll carefully remove the early design and replace it with the later design.

Still baffles me as to why my brother installed the early design and kept the holes on the rocker. Oh well.
