how do ya get the headlight knob off?
 

I can see how the switch comes out of the dash but my knob seems to be stuck on, how does it come off and while we are at do you have to remove the barrel in the ignition to remove this from the dash? also who sells the best woodgrain insertts for a 68 lemans,

From 67 manual. Should be similar.

Ignition sw, you have to remove lock cylinder with key and pin in hole (do search), then unscrew bezel.

headlight switch, reach under the dash & feel on top of the switch. There is a button that has to be depressed while pulling on the switch. The stem will come out. You may have to play with the button a little to get it to release.

I sold my '69 GTO a while back but I seem to remember the headlight knob having a very small allen screw on the bottom of the knob that had to be loosened for the knob to come off? Maybe I am remembering wrong but look directly under the knob and see if there isn't one.

lazlo has it. button is a small spring loaded thing. they tend to freeze up so after pushing it down, push and pull the light switch on and off a few times and it should pop off when you pull it out. then there's a nut below that you can grab with a big flat head screw driver to get it off.

The hidden headlight cars have several vacuum lines routing in and out of the rear section of the switch so maybe the switch is different in that regard than the ones on fixed headlight cars? That or my car had some rigged knob on it! Now I wish I had it back just to look at that knob:)

No Rick, Same switch layout but w/Hideaway gear...Dennis will probably laugh as this pic was used (and over-used so many times) but I find it helpful:D...Just below to the right of my marking of Nipple 1 is the spring loaded button used to release the knob...

ok, my bad, I'm a believer now:) somehow I got mine off and put a new woodgrain panel and a chrome headlight switch bezel without knowing about the spring loaded button or that the shaft came out!

Rob, you KNEW I was coming for you on this one! We need a way of attaching one of those ebay counters to the picture to count the posts it appears in!
