72 Trans Am or Clone?

Hi all.
My friend is interested in a 72 TA that is for up for sale. He and I are going there to look at it.
Is there anyway to tell if itīs a real TA or a clone
It has a 455 engine ,TH-400, Shaker hood ,all the spoilers and air dam, sport mirrors,
air outlets on the front fenders, and Safe-T-track axle.
Donīt know if there is rally gauges and the heavy duty suspension on it.
I have only seen pictures of it.

Many Thanks / Johan

The VIN number should tell you if it is a TA and what engine it came with. Second digit, 2V87 should be a TA, U is Formula, T is Esprit, S is Base Firebird. 455engines were X or Y in the 5th digit of the VIN.

For '72 the vin# will tell the story. The first 6 characters should be 2V87X2.

2=Pontiac
V=Trans Am
87=Firebird
X=455HO motor (all trans ams had this in '72)
2=1972

should be 7F6 on the center exhuast ports and 2 peice intake.all of these parts can be replaced but can cost alot of money.

Hi again.
Well, my buddy and I went there and looked at the car.
I checked the VIN and it really was a genuine T/A.
I also found out that it had a manual transmission from the beginning.
Solid body, very little rust but pretty much everything else was worn and torn.
The code on the engine was WD. The 7F6 heads was changed to a pair of #15,
and many other parts were gone.
Sorry to say there was to much work on the car for the price the owner wanted for it,
so my friend passed on it.
I appreciate all the help from you guys...

Regards

Johan

What colour is it and how much does the guy want for it?

Oak 08-17-2008 09:15 AM

It is black now, but the original paint was blue. The price is 21500$ ,not negotiable.
