Moser Rear Ends
 

Ordered a Moser 12 bolt Truetrac 33spline crate rear end from Frank at GPSuperstore (separate note about them). Build and delivery was pretty quick. For the most part, quality looks great. There are a couple things I should note.

1) The housing castings and one weld isn't exactly perfect. There is a sand void on one area of the housing that I don't think will be a problem. There is a weld that I would have expected better quality on one of the shock mounts. Nothing terrible, just not what I was expecting, I guess.

2) I got the "performance cover" (meaning aluminum cover). Since I needed to paint the housing, I removed the cover. I noticed that 11 of the bolts were of one size and had one lock washer and 1 bolt was about 3/16" longer and had two lock washers on it. I was curious and called Moser. They said that they just use the bolts they're given, and probably one was a little longer so they added another washer. Didn't seem too concerned.

Probably just being picky, but I expect more. OTOH, it is a nice housing and will likely perform flawlessly.

Moser's local to me and they build a good unit. I know the guys who assemble the diffs personally and they're good at what they do.


RE the welds and the casting flaw. If the flaw's noticible I'd probably put some JB weld or a similar product in it if it looks like it will be a problem

IIRC they're still welding the shock mounts and spring pads on manually and variations occur.

I think you'll like what you bought after it's installed.

Well if you are indeed picky you should have someone who is good at it check out the ring and pinion set up. More than a few have come from Moser that are noisy. Ask any, including me, 4th gen F-body guy as it's a popular upgrade.

The had a problem with the torque arm transferring noise in the birds. That's why the factory insulated them with rubber.

No one's perfect but they build a good product.

Like I said, I think it'll perform great, and the quality overall seems very high. The casting voids are minor, and the welding void isn't terrible, just a little less than what I'd expect. What really surprised me was what appeared to be a lazy approach to use an incorrect bolt with an extra washer and have no explanation or concern when asked about it. I'm going to replace the bolt with the correct size myself. Seems as though they would have done that before shipping. It's not accidental - the extra lock washer was deliberately put on there because of the longer shaft to make it fit. Problem is (though it really has no effect actually) that the extra lock washer obviously screws up the torque spec on the rear cover. Really dumb in my opinion when it's a soft bolt that probably costs 10 cents.

Not to knock Moser (as they did a super nice job on some 12-bolt axles for me) butt

Strange's Dana60 Rear assembly was IMPRESSIVE in all aspects of casting, machining, fastners, and shipping method.

I have a Moser 12 bolt in my 69 GTO and the performance cover. The longer bolt is for the top bracket that holds the rear brake line "tee" fitting bracket. Essentially you install once lock washer on each side of the bracket and install it in one of the top two bolt holes. If you do not have this bracket, you can probably just use the two washers and torque it down.
Sounds like we got the same rear with the TrueTrac. After hammering it on the Power Tour, I love that rear end.

Ahh, I wish it was that simple. I don't mean to knock Moser altogether as these torque arms will make any gear noise louder but my experience along with many others warrants an inspection. Why would their housing be louder than the stocker, even with aftermarket gears? The torque arm only has rubber in the front mount and the rubber serves to allow the torque arm to slide in/out as it moves with the rear just like the drive shaft. I’m sure it helps some with noise but it’s not like it’s rubber mounted at the rear, that would help a lot but wouldn't work too well. :p
Anyway, it’ll probly be ok but I’m picky and if its mine I would check it out for gear set up and cleanliness as I have had and heard about such problems. Again, not knocking Moser altogether, I like Moser parts, I've sent them plenty of money even after I bought my 12 bolt but that's alot of money out if there is a problem.

Actually, that makes sense - sort of - and makes me feel a bit better. I wish they would have just said that! Though, because the inner lock washer is recessed into the cover so I'm not sure how the bracket would fit.

Glad you like the rear end! I'm looking forward to getting mine in, as well as the engine, TKO600, etc. :)

If the Gears are set up properly you will hear next to no noise!, if lockers with side gears or "Dogs" are used it may be another issue all together, it can be a pain to set up a 10 or 12 bolt and take a few tries to get the tooth pattern right, Moser seems to make a good product, IMO if it makes noise it does not have the right gear tooth pattern for long term street use

We have had a Moser 12-bolt in the GeeTO Tiger since 2001 and it has performed flawlessly. We also have a Moser 12-bolt in the Ponte Carlo and it too has been flawless since 2002. The Ponte used to eat up 12 bolts before we went with the stronger Moser unit.

I have just bolted my M9 (Moser fabricated 9 inch) together with a 3.70 Truetrac which is going into my wagon. I am expecting many years of service from this rear end as well.

...and besides, Rob Moser is a USC grad.
